Welcome to Part 5 of this study on the Biblical teaching concerning the final punishment of the wicked.

In the previous articles we examined:

Having examined these passages individually, we now turn to the wider testimony of Scripture.

The central question is simple:

Does the Bible teach that the wicked will live forever in conscious torment, or does it teach that the final punishment of sin is death and destruction?

Rather than beginning with later theological traditions, let us allow the Scriptures themselves to speak.

What Some Christian Teachers Say

One well-known evangelical ministry explains eternal death like this:

"Eternal death... is a death that continues through eternity... experienced on a continual basis."

They also argue that because Daniel 12:2, Matthew 25:46 and Revelation 20 all describe everlasting judgment, the punishment itself must consist of everlasting conscious torment.

This viewpoint is held by many Christians.

However, an important question remains:

Is this actually how the Bible defines death?

What Does the Bible Mean by Death?

Throughout Scripture, death is consistently presented as the opposite of life.

Paul writes:

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 6:23

Notice the contrast:

• Death

• Eternal Life

Paul does not contrast eternal life with another form of eternal life lived in suffering.

Instead, he contrasts:

Death vs. Life

Jesus Defined Eternal Life

Jesus Himself explained what eternal life is.

John 17:3

"Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."

Jesus identifies eternal life as God's gift to those who know the Father and His Messiah.

If eternal life belongs to both the righteous and the wicked, then the distinction Jesus makes becomes much harder to understand.

Jesus Said the Wicked Perish

Perhaps the most famous verse in Scripture says:

John 3:16

"...that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."

Again we see two alternatives:

• perish

• eternal life

Not:

• eternal life in heaven

• eternal life in hell

What Does "Perish" Mean?

The Greek word translated perish is ἀπόλλυμι (apollumi).

Strong's Concordance defines it as:

• destroy

• destroy utterly

• kill

It also describes it as:

"the resultant death being viewed as certain."

HELPS Word Studies similarly explains the word as referring to complete destruction and ruin.

The ordinary meaning of perish is therefore destruction—not continued conscious existence.

Jesus Said God Can Destroy Both Body and Soul

Matthew 10:28 records Jesus saying:

"Fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna."

Notice Jesus uses the word destroy.

He does not say:

"Preserve forever in torment."

He speaks of destruction.

Ezekiel Says the Soul Dies

Ezekiel 18:4 states:

"The soul who sins shall die."

The verse simply says:

the soul dies.

It does not describe the soul as naturally immortal.

The Bible Repeatedly Speaks of Death

Throughout both Testaments we repeatedly encounter the same language.

• Proverbs 11:19 — evil leads to death

• James 1:15 — sin brings forth death

• Romans 8:13 — living according to the flesh results in death

• Revelation 21:8 — the lake of fire is called the second death

Again and again, Scripture describes the final consequence of sin as death, destruction, and perishing.

Death Is the Second Death

Revelation 20:14 says:

"This is the second death—the lake of fire."

The inspired text itself identifies the lake of fire as the second death.

It does not rename it as "eternal life in torment."

John Says the Unbeliever Will Not See Life

John 3:36 says:

"The one who does not obey the Son shall not see life."

This verse again contrasts:

Life

versus

No life.

Psalm 104 Gives the Same Picture

Psalm 104:35 says:

"Let sinners be consumed out of the earth... let the wicked be no more."

The picture is one of removal and destruction rather than perpetual existence.

Revelation Ends With a Perfect Creation

Finally, Revelation describes God's completed Kingdom.

Revelation 21:4 declares:

"Death shall be no more, neither mourning nor crying nor pain anymore."

The Bible ends with a universe cleansed from sin, suffering, pain, rebellion, and death.

God creates a renewed heaven and earth where righteousness dwells.

Final Thoughts

Throughout this study we have examined numerous passages describing the destiny of the wicked.

Again and again the Bible uses words such as:

• death

• perish

• destroy

• consume

• utterly destroy

• decay

• vanish

• second death

Whether one ultimately concludes these expressions refer to annihilation, conscious punishment, or another interpretation is a matter of theological discussion. However, these are the repeated biblical terms that deserve careful consideration.

As always, the safest approach is to examine every passage in its context and compare Scripture with Scripture.

The good news remains unchanged:

God desires that people repent, receive His gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, and become part of the new creation where there will be:

• no more death,

• no more sorrow,

• no more pain,

• and no more sin.

May we continue to follow the apostolic instruction:

"Test all things; hold fast what is good."

1 Thessalonians 5:21

The hope held out by Scripture is not the natural immortality of the soul, but the resurrection of the dead through Jesus Christ and the gift of immortality that God alone can bestow.
