THE GREAT COMMISSION — ARE WE USING WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN US?
Jesus did not call His followers simply to believe the Gospel privately. He commanded His disciples to take the message to others.
He said:
“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to all the creation.”
— Mark 16:15, BLB
The message was to be proclaimed among the nations:
“And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations.”
— Mark 13:10, BLB
Jesus also taught that the Gospel of the Kingdom would become a testimony to all nations:
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed in the whole inhabited earth, for a testimony to all the nations…”
— Matthew 24:14, BLB
Jude gives us another powerful picture of attempting to rescue others:
“And save others, snatching them out of the fire…”
— Jude 1:23, BLB
And Jesus warned us not to be ashamed to acknowledge Him before others:
“Therefore everyone who will confess Me before men, I also will confess him before My Father in the heavens.”
— Matthew 10:32, BLB
ARE WE USING THE OPPORTUNITIES GOD HAS GIVEN US?
Remember one of Jesus' most important parables:
THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS — MATTHEW 25:14–30
The lesson is powerful.
The servants were entrusted with something belonging to their master. They were expected to use what they had been given rather than bury it and do nothing.
The servants who faithfully used what had been entrusted to them were rewarded.
But the servant who buried what he had been given was condemned for his failure to use it.
There is an important lesson here for every follower of Jesus:
BE PRODUCTIVE WITH THE ABILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES GOD HAS GIVEN YOU.
Not everyone has the same abilities.
Not everyone has the same resources.
Not everyone has the same opportunities.
One person may preach.
Another may write.
Another may teach.
Another may produce videos.
Another may share Scripture.
Another may speak personally to friends, neighbours or family.
Another may help someone who is struggling and thereby open an opportunity to share the love of God and the Gospel of Christ.
The question is not whether we have all been given the same opportunity.
The question is:
WHAT ARE WE DOING WITH THE OPPORTUNITIES WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN?
THE PARABLE APPLIED
The basic lessons of the Parable of the Talents are simple:
Be faithful with the opportunities God has given you.
Use your abilities rather than burying them.
Remember that what we possess ultimately belongs to God and that we are stewards of what has been entrusted to us.
Diligence and faithfulness are rewarded, while deliberate negligence carries consequences.
This should make every Christian think seriously about how we use our lives.
If we know the Gospel, why keep it entirely to ourselves?
If we have discovered something that could help another person find God, why bury it?
If we have an opportunity to teach God's love, mercy, grace and forgiveness, why remain silent?
And Scripture also calls people to repentance and warns that our choices have consequences. Sharing the Gospel therefore involves both the wonderful promise of salvation and the serious call to turn from sin and follow Christ.
Jesus said:
“GO.”
“PROCLAIM.”
“BE MY WITNESSES.”
The Gospel was never intended to remain buried.
Whatever abilities and opportunities God has entrusted to us, may we use them faithfully to help others discover the truth and come to know the one true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.
