Chapter 1

UFOs and Alien Abductions

What Is Really Happening?

Introduction

For more than seventy years, reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), and alleged alien abductions have fascinated millions of people around the world.

Governments have investigated them.

Military pilots have reported them.

Scientists have debated them.

Researchers have devoted entire careers to studying them.

Television documentaries, books, podcasts, and internet videos continue to explore one of the greatest mysteries of our time.

But despite decades of investigation, one fundamental question remains unanswered:

What is really happening?

Are some of these reports simply misidentified aircraft, natural phenomena, or deliberate hoaxes?

Could some experiences be explained by sleep paralysis, false memories, psychological factors, or other medical conditions?

Could there be advanced technology that governments have not publicly disclosed?

Or is there a spiritual explanation that many have overlooked?

These questions deserve careful investigation rather than blind belief or automatic dismissal.

Why I Began This Investigation

For many years, I paid little attention to the UFO phenomenon.

Like many people, I assumed it was largely the subject of science fiction, sensational newspaper headlines, and extraordinary stories that were impossible to verify.

However, as I continued researching a wide range of historical, scientific, archaeological, and biblical subjects, I repeatedly encountered people who sincerely claimed to have experienced something they could not explain.

The more I investigated, the more I realised that this subject could not simply be ignored.

Whether every claim is true or false is not the point.

The sheer number of reports, the consistency of many eyewitness accounts, the continued government interest, and the enormous public fascination make this a subject worthy of serious investigation.

That does not mean we should believe every extraordinary story.

Neither should we dismiss every witness without first examining the evidence.

My Personal Investigation

As my research continued, I was given opportunities that very few independent researchers receive.

I conducted and participated in interviews with individuals who had spent years investigating the UFO and alien-abduction phenomenon.

Among them was Dr. David Jacobs, one of the world's best-known researchers into alleged alien abductions. Over several decades, Dr. Jacobs interviewed hundreds of people who believed they had experienced alien encounters and published a number of influential books presenting his conclusions.

I also took part in a live Fox interview connected with Matthew Reed and T. Reed, whose reported experiences became one of the better-known alien-abduction cases in America.

In addition, I interviewed L. A. Marzulli, author, lecturer, and researcher, whose work explores the possible relationship between UFOs, biblical prophecy, Genesis 6, the Nephilim, and spiritual deception.

These interviews gave me the opportunity to ask questions directly, hear the evidence presented by those closest to the subject, and compare their conclusions with what the Bible teaches.

Throughout this series, I will share insights from those interviews alongside historical research, government investigations, eyewitness testimony, scientific explanations, and the Scriptures themselves.

Our Purpose

This series has not been written to promote fear.

Neither has it been written to convince readers that every UFO sighting or every alien-abduction account is genuine.

Its purpose is much simpler.

To investigate.

To compare the evidence.

To separate established facts from eyewitness testimony, speculation, and interpretation.

And above all, to ask one question:

What does the Bible have to say about all of this?

If there is a biblical explanation for at least some of these extraordinary reports, then Christians should understand it.

If there is not, we should be equally willing to acknowledge that.

Our goal is not to defend a preconceived conclusion.

Our goal is to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

Coming Up Next

In the next chapter, we will begin by examining the remarkable history of the UFO phenomenon.

When did modern UFO reports really begin?

What did the earliest witnesses claim to see?

How did the subject become a worldwide phenomenon?

And why are governments around the world still investigating unidentified objects in our skies?

Chapter 2

Why the UFO Phenomenon Cannot Simply Be Ignored

Chapter 2 poster showing UFOs over a city, official investigation files, scientists, military personnel, an open Bible, and a researcher exploring why the UFO phenomenon continues to attract worldwide attention.

Why do reports of unidentified flying objects continue to emerge from around the world? In this chapter, Simon Brown investigates eyewitness testimony, official government investigations, scientific research, and biblical teaching to examine why the UFO phenomenon remains one of the most debated mysteries of modern history. Rather than accepting popular opinion, this study encourages readers to examine the evidence carefully and compare every claim with Scripture.

Before discussing alien abductions, government investigations, or what the Bible may have to say, we must first answer a very simple question.

Why has the UFO phenomenon attracted so much worldwide attention?

For many people, UFOs are nothing more than science fiction.

For others, they are evidence that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe.

Still others believe they represent advanced military technology, secret government projects, psychological experiences, or even spiritual deception.

Whatever conclusion a person eventually reaches, one fact is undeniable.

The subject refuses to disappear.

For more than seventy years, reports of unusual objects in the sky have continued to emerge from every part of the world.

These reports have come from ordinary members of the public, commercial airline pilots, military personnel, police officers, scientists, engineers, and even astronauts.

Many sightings have later been explained as aircraft, balloons, satellites, weather phenomena, or mistaken observations.

Others have been exposed as deliberate hoaxes.

Yet some reports remain unexplained, even after official investigation.

It is these unexplained cases that continue to generate worldwide interest.

The purpose of this book is not to prove that extraterrestrials are visiting the Earth.

Neither is it to dismiss every witness as mistaken or dishonest.

Instead, we will ask a different question:

What does the available evidence actually show?

A Worldwide Phenomenon

Reports of unusual aerial objects are not confined to one country, one religion, or one culture.

Accounts have been recorded throughout North America, Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

People from every walk of life have claimed to witness objects that appeared to move in ways they could not explain.

Some reports involve lights in the sky.

Others describe structured craft.

A smaller number include claims of close encounters or alleged contact with non-human beings.

Whether these accounts have a common explanation remains one of the central questions of this investigation.

Why Are Governments Interested?

One reason this subject deserves careful attention is that governments have repeatedly investigated unidentified aerial phenomena.

Over the years, several official studies have attempted to determine whether these reports presented a threat to national security or could be explained by conventional means.

Most sightings eventually received ordinary explanations.

However, some cases remained unidentified despite detailed investigation.

The existence of official investigations does not prove that extraterrestrial visitors are real.

It does show that governments have considered the subject important enough to study seriously.

That alone should encourage us to investigate carefully rather than simply dismiss the entire subject without examination.

Extraordinary Claims Require Careful Examination

Throughout history, extraordinary claims have always demanded careful investigation.

Some have later proved to be true.

Others have been shown to be misunderstandings or deliberate deception.

The UFO phenomenon is no different.

As we continue through this series, we will examine:

  • Well-documented historical cases.

  • Eyewitness testimony.

  • Scientific and psychological explanations.

  • Government investigations.

  • Claims of alien abductions.

  • The research of leading investigators.

  • The biblical perspective.

Each will be examined on its own merits.

No conclusion should be accepted merely because it is popular.

Neither should it be rejected simply because it seems extraordinary.

Our Standard

Throughout this book we will follow one simple principle.

Evidence must come before conclusions.

Where the evidence is strong, we should acknowledge it.

Where it is weak, we should say so.

Where questions remain unanswered, we should admit it honestly.

Finally, every claim will be compared with the teaching of Scripture.

If the Bible speaks to this subject, we should listen carefully.

If it does not, we should avoid making claims that go beyond what God has revealed.

In this way, we hope to separate fact from fiction, evidence from speculation, and truth from error.

Coming Next

In the next chapter, we will begin examining one of the most fascinating aspects of the entire mystery:

Who is Dr. David Jacobs, and why did he devote more than forty years of his life to investigating people who claimed they had been abducted by non-human beings?

There we will look at his research, his published work, and the exclusive interviews I had the privilege of conducting with him.

I think Chapter 3 should be one of the strongest chapters in the book because it introduces one of the best-known researchers in the field.

Chapter 3

Dr. David Jacobs

Forty Years Investigating the Alien Abduction Phenomenon

Introduction

Who is Dr. David Jacobs, and why did he devote more than forty years of his life to researching one of the most controversial subjects in modern history?

Unlike many people who investigate UFOs, Dr. Jacobs did not begin his career as a scientist, astronomer, or military investigator. He was a historian with a Ph.D. in American history who became fascinated by the growing number of people claiming to have experienced alien abductions.

Over several decades, he interviewed hundreds of individuals who believed they had encountered non-human beings. His research led him to publish several influential books and become one of the world's most recognised researchers into the alleged alien-abduction phenomenon.

Whether readers ultimately agree with his conclusions or reject them, Dr. Jacobs' work has had a profound influence on the modern discussion surrounding alien abductions.

My Interview with Dr. David Jacobs

One of the highlights of my own investigation into the UFO phenomenon was the opportunity to conduct full-length video interviews with Dr. David Jacobs.

Rather than relying only on newspaper reports or second-hand accounts, I was able to ask him directly about his decades of research, the patterns he observed, and the conclusions he believed the evidence supported.

These interviews form an important part of my own investigation and are available for readers and viewers who wish to hear Dr. Jacobs explain his research in his own words.

Throughout this series I will refer back to those interviews where appropriate, allowing readers to compare his views with those of other researchers, scientific explanations, and, most importantly, the teaching of Scripture.

How Did Dr. Jacobs Conduct His Research?

Unlike investigators who focused primarily on UFO sightings, Dr. Jacobs concentrated on people who claimed they had experienced close encounters or abductions.

Over many years he interviewed hundreds of individuals from different backgrounds.

He looked for recurring patterns rather than isolated stories.

Among the subjects frequently discussed by those he interviewed were:

  • Missing time.

  • Reports of unusual beings.

  • Alleged medical examinations.

  • Repeated encounters over many years.

  • Claims involving hybrid children.

  • Psychological and emotional effects following the experiences.

Dr. Jacobs believed that the remarkable similarities found in many independent accounts deserved serious investigation.

His critics, however, questioned both his methods and his conclusions, arguing that alternative explanations should also be considered.

Throughout this book we will examine both perspectives carefully.

An Open Mind Is Essential

The purpose of this chapter is not to persuade readers that every account collected by Dr. Jacobs represents an actual alien abduction.

Neither is it to dismiss the testimonies of hundreds of people without careful examination.

Instead, we will consider:

  • What evidence did Dr. Jacobs present?

  • What conclusions did he reach?

  • How have other researchers responded?

  • What criticisms have been made of his work?

  • How does his research compare with the biblical worldview?

Only after examining all sides of the discussion should we begin drawing conclusions.

Looking Ahead

In the next chapter, we will examine some of the most famous alien-abduction cases ever reported, beginning with the experiences that first brought this extraordinary subject to worldwide attention.

We will compare eyewitness testimony, historical records, and alternative explanations while asking one simple question:

Dr. David M. Jacobs is a retired Associate Professor of History at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he specialized in twentieth-century American history and culture.

His interest in UFOs began during the 1960s, eventually leading him to devote decades of research to the UFO and alleged alien-abduction phenomenon. In 1973, he completed a doctoral dissertation on the history of UFOs in America, one of the earliest Ph.D. dissertations devoted to the subject.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jacobs interviewed hundreds of people who reported alleged alien-abduction experiences. According to his published biography, he conducted more than 1,200 hypnotic regression sessions and collected thousands of hours of testimony from over 150 individuals.

His work has become some of the most widely discussed—and debated—in the field of UFO and alien-abduction research.

Dr. Jacobs' first book, based on his doctoral dissertation, examined the history of UFO reports in the United States and society's response to the phenomenon. It remains one of the earliest academic studies of UFOs published by a university press.

This book brought Dr. David Jacobs international recognition. Drawing on interviews with people who reported alleged alien abductions, it describes recurring patterns in their testimonies and presents his interpretation of those experiences.

Betty and Barney Hill

The Alien Abduction Case That Shocked the World

Chapter 4 poster featuring Betty and Barney Hill, a UFO over the White Mountains of New Hampshire, an alien abduction scene, historical newspaper headlines, and investigative evidence introducing the world's most famous alleged alien abduction case.

In September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill reported an extraordinary encounter that became the first alleged alien-abduction case to receive worldwide attention. Their account introduced concepts such as missing time, medical examinations, and recovered memories into modern UFO research. In this chapter, Simon Brown carefully examines the historical evidence, eyewitness testimony, later investigations, skeptical explanations, and the biblical perspective, encouraging readers to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

Introduction

On the night of 19–20 September 1961, an ordinary married couple travelling home through the White Mountains of New Hampshire reported an experience that would become one of the most famous and controversial UFO cases in history.

Betty and Barney Hill claimed they encountered a strange object in the night sky before experiencing a period of "missing time" that neither could immediately explain.

In the weeks and months that followed, both began suffering from anxiety, disturbing dreams, and recurring memories of what they believed had happened.

Eventually, under hypnosis, they independently described an extraordinary account in which they claimed they had been taken aboard an unidentified craft and examined by non-human beings.

Their story became the first alleged alien-abduction case to receive widespread international attention and helped shape almost every discussion about alien abductions that followed.

More than sixty years later, the Hill case continues to divide opinion.

Some researchers believe it represents compelling evidence of genuine alien contact.

Others argue that the experiences can be explained through psychological factors, stress, memory reconstruction, dreams, hypnosis, or misidentification.

Whatever conclusion one reaches, the Hill case remains one of the most influential cases in the history of UFO research.

Why This Case Matters

The Hill case introduced several features that later appeared in numerous other alleged abduction accounts, including:

  • Missing time.

  • Medical examinations.

  • Small non-human beings.

  • Bright lights.

  • Interrupted memories.

  • Emotional trauma after the event.

Whether these similarities point to a genuine phenomenon, shared cultural influences, or psychological processes remains one of the central questions we will explore throughout this book.

Our Approach

As with every chapter in this series, we will avoid sensationalism and examine the evidence carefully.

We will ask:

  • What did Betty and Barney Hill actually report?

  • What evidence supports their claims?

  • What criticisms have been raised?

  • How have later researchers interpreted the case?

  • Is there any biblical perspective that should be considered?

Only after examining all the available evidence should we attempt to draw conclusions.

Chapter 5

Missing Time

One of the Greatest Mysteries in UFO Research

Introduction

One of the most intriguing and controversial features of many reported UFO encounters is the phenomenon known as "missing time."

Individuals claim that minutes—or sometimes even hours—appear to have disappeared from their memory.

They remember travelling normally.

Then suddenly they find themselves many miles away, or discover that far more time has passed than seems possible.

In many cases, the individuals have no immediate explanation for the missing period.

Only later, sometimes after recurring dreams, flashbacks, or hypnosis, do they begin to describe what they believe occurred during the lost time.

This phenomenon has been reported by people from many different countries and has become one of the most frequently discussed subjects in UFO research.

But what really causes missing time?

The Betty and Barney Hill Case

One of the earliest and most famous reports of missing time came from Betty and Barney Hill in September 1961.

While driving home through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the couple later realised that approximately two hours of their journey could not be accounted for.

Neither could clearly explain where the missing time had gone.

This unanswered question became one of the central mysteries of their case and later influenced many other reported abduction accounts.

Similar Reports Around the World

Since the Hill case, thousands of people have claimed similar experiences.

Common reports include:

  • Losing several hours with no memory of what occurred.

  • Finding themselves in a completely different location.

  • Clocks showing far more time had passed than expected.

  • Family members wondering where they had been.

  • Strange dreams or recurring memories following the event.

  • Unexplained anxiety or emotional distress.

Whether these experiences share a common cause remains the subject of continuing debate.

Possible Explanations

Researchers have proposed several explanations for reports of missing time.

Some suggest the experiences may involve psychological factors such as memory disruption, stress, trauma, or dissociation.

Others point to neurological conditions, sleep-related phenomena, or errors in time perception.

Some UFO researchers believe missing time may represent evidence of an actual external event that witnesses cannot consciously remember.

Others interpret at least some reports as part of a spiritual phenomenon.

Throughout this book, we will examine each of these possibilities carefully rather than assuming one explanation fits every case.

What Does the Bible Say?

The Bible does not specifically describe modern reports of "missing time."

However, it repeatedly warns believers that spiritual deception is real and that experiences should be tested rather than accepted uncritically.

As we continue this investigation, we will compare reported experiences with biblical teaching while recognising that extraordinary claims require careful examination.

Looking Ahead

In the next chapter we will examine one of the most controversial investigative techniques ever used in UFO research:

Hypnotic Regression

Can hypnosis recover genuine forgotten memories?

Or can it unintentionally create false memories?

Understanding this question is essential because many famous alien-abduction accounts rely heavily upon memories recovered under hypnosis.

Timeline of Famous Missing-Time Cases

1947 Kenneth Arnold reports mysterious flying objects over Mount Rainier.

1957 Antonio Villas Boas reports an encounter in Brazil involving missing time.

1961 Betty and Barney Hill report approximately two hours of missing time.

1967 Herbert Schirmer reports missing time following a UFO encounter.

1973 Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker report an unusual encounter in Mississippi.

1975 Travis Walton disappears for five days in Arizona.

1976–1990s Thousands of additional missing-time reports are investigated worldwide.

1980 Rendlesham Forest incident raises further questions regarding unexplained time loss.

1990s–Present Researchers continue collecting reports from around the world.

The first widely publicised missing-time case. The Hills later claimed approximately two hours of their journey could not be explained.

Disappeared for five days after fellow workers reported witnessing a bright object in an Arizona forest.

Reported being taken aboard a strange craft while fishing in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

A police officer who reported a close encounter followed by missing time and unusual memories.

One of the earliest internationally known reports involving alleged abduction and missing time.

Researchers have proposed numerous explanations for missing-time experiences.

These include:

• Stress and trauma.

• Dissociation.

• Sleep paralysis.

• False memory formation.

• Hypnosis effects.

• Neurological disorders.

• Temporal-lobe activity.

• Misjudging the passage of time.

• Environmental influences.

• Deliberate hoaxes.

Although many cases may have ordinary explanations, others remain disputed and continue to be debated by researchers.

The Bible never mentions modern UFO encounters or missing time.

However, Scripture repeatedly warns that believers should carefully test extraordinary experiences.

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but test the spirits whether they are from God..."— 1 John 4:1

"For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."— 2 Corinthians 11:14

"See that no one deceives you."— Matthew 24:4

Christians are therefore encouraged to examine every claim carefully, compare it with Scripture, and avoid drawing conclusions without sufficient evidence.

In this chapter, Simon Brown examines how hypnosis has been used by researchers, including Dr. David Jacobs, while also considering scientific studies on memory, suggestion, and false recollection. Readers are encouraged to examine both the supporting evidence and the criticisms before comparing these claims with the Bible's instruction to test every experience carefully (1 John 4:1).

HYPNOTIC REGRESSION

Recovered Memories or False Memories?

In this chapter, Simon Brown examines how hypnosis has been used by researchers, including Dr. David Jacobs, while also considering scientific studies on memory, suggestion, and false recollection. Readers are encouraged to examine both the supporting evidence and the criticisms before comparing these claims with the Bible's instruction to test every experience carefully (1 John 4:1).

INTRODUCTION

One of the most controversial methods used in UFO research is hypnotic regression.

Many people who report periods of "missing time" claim they have little or no conscious memory of what happened during the unexplained interval. To investigate these reports, some researchers have used hypnotic regression in an attempt to help witnesses recall memories they believe have been forgotten or suppressed.

During hypnosis, many individuals have described extraordinary experiences involving unusual beings, medical examinations, strange craft, and detailed conversations with non-human entities. These accounts have played a significant role in shaping modern alien-abduction research.

Supporters of hypnotic regression believe it can help recover genuine memories that are not immediately accessible to conscious recall. Critics argue that hypnosis may unintentionally create false memories through suggestion, imagination, expectation, or leading questions.

This disagreement has become one of the most important and controversial debates in the study of alleged alien abductions.

WHY THIS CHAPTER MATTERS

Understanding hypnotic regression is essential because many of the best-known UFO and alleged alien-abduction cases—including the experiences reported by Betty and Barney Hill—were investigated using this technique.

If hypnotic regression can accurately recover forgotten memories, then many famous cases may deserve greater consideration.

However, if hypnosis can unintentionally create memories that never actually occurred, investigators must exercise great caution before accepting such accounts as reliable historical evidence.

The reliability of hypnotic regression therefore has enormous implications for UFO research and for the conclusions that many investigators have reached over the past fifty years.

QUESTIONS THIS CHAPTER WILL ANSWER

• What is hypnotic regression?
• How does hypnosis affect human memory?
• Can forgotten memories genuinely be recovered?
• Can hypnosis unintentionally create false memories?
• Why do some UFO researchers trust hypnotic regression while others reject it?
• How did Dr. David Jacobs use hypnotic regression during his investigations?
• What do psychologists and memory researchers conclude about recovered memories?
• What principles does the Bible provide for testing extraordinary experiences?

OUR APPROACH

This chapter does not begin with the assumption that every hypnotically recovered memory is either true or false.

Instead, we will carefully examine both sides of the debate by comparing scientific research, psychological studies, historical investigations, eyewitness testimony, and biblical principles.

Throughout this book our aim is not to promote sensational claims or dismiss unusual experiences without examination. Rather, our goal is to investigate the evidence honestly, weigh the arguments carefully, and encourage every reader to reach an informed conclusion based upon the available evidence and the teaching of Scripture.

The chapters that follow will examine the history of hypnotic regression, the researchers who have used it, the scientific understanding of memory, the evidence for and against recovered memories, the criticisms of false-memory research, and the biblical principles that should guide every Christian when evaluating extraordinary claims.

Only after carefully examining all of these areas will we move on to the famous UFO cases themselves, beginning with the Travis Walton incident.

WHAT IS HYPNOTIC REGRESSION?

Hypnotic regression is a technique in which a trained hypnotist guides a relaxed individual into a focused state of attention and then asks questions about past events that may not be easily remembered.

Some therapists have used hypnosis in an attempt to help people recall forgotten experiences, while some UFO researchers have used it to investigate reports of missing time and alleged alien abductions.

Supporters believe hypnosis may help individuals remember details that are not immediately accessible during normal conscious recall.

Critics argue that hypnosis can increase suggestibility and may unintentionally lead to imagined or false memories being accepted as genuine memories.

For this reason, many psychologists urge caution when interpreting memories recovered under hypnosis.

Throughout this chapter we will examine both the strengths and the limitations of hypnotic regression before considering how it has been used in UFO investigations.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HYPNOSIS

The practice of hypnosis has existed in various forms for hundreds of years. Ancient civilizations, including those of Egypt, Greece, and India, are believed to have used forms of focused attention and trance-like states for healing and religious purposes.

Modern hypnosis began to develop during the eighteenth century through the work of Franz Anton Mesmer, who believed an invisible force, which he called "animal magnetism," influenced human health. Although many of Mesmer's theories were later rejected, his work helped stimulate scientific interest in hypnosis.

In the nineteenth century, Scottish physician Dr. James Braid introduced the term "hypnosis." He rejected many of Mesmer's ideas and recognised hypnosis as a psychological state of focused attention rather than a mysterious force.

Throughout the twentieth century, hypnosis became increasingly accepted as a legitimate clinical tool. Doctors, psychologists, and therapists began using it to help some patients manage pain, anxiety, phobias, smoking addiction, and certain psychological conditions.

Later, some UFO researchers also began using hypnotic regression to investigate reports of missing time and alleged alien abductions. This remains one of the most controversial uses of hypnosis and continues to divide researchers today.

Before examining how hypnosis has been used in UFO investigations, it is helpful to understand the major events in its historical development.

TIMELINE OF THE HISTORY OF HYPNOSIS

Ancient Times

Early forms of trance and focused attention were used in Egypt, Greece, India, and other ancient cultures for healing and religious ceremonies.

1770s

Franz Anton Mesmer developed his theory of "animal magnetism." Although his explanation was later rejected, his work helped stimulate interest in hypnosis.

1843

Scottish physician Dr. James Braid introduced the term "hypnosis" and recognised it as a psychological state of focused attention.

Late 1800s

Doctors and psychologists began studying hypnosis as a medical and psychological technique.

1900s

Hypnosis became increasingly accepted for certain clinical uses, including pain management, anxiety, phobias, and habit control.

1960s–1970s

Some UFO investigators began using hypnotic regression to investigate reports of missing time and alleged alien abductions.

1980s–Present

Researchers continue to debate the reliability of hypnotically recovered memories. Some believe hypnosis can assist memory recall, while others warn that it may increase the risk of false memories through suggestion.

Today

Clinical hypnosis is recognised in some areas of medicine and psychology when performed by properly trained professionals. However, its use in recovering historical memories—particularly in UFO investigations—remains highly controversial.

MAJOR RESEARCHERS USING HYPNOTIC REGRESSION

As reports of alleged alien abductions increased during the second half of the twentieth century, several investigators began using hypnotic regression in an attempt to recover memories that witnesses believed had been forgotten.

Three researchers became especially well known for their work in this field.

Budd Hopkins (1931–2011)

Budd Hopkins was one of the first researchers to popularise the use of hypnotic regression in UFO investigations. Through interviews and hypnosis sessions, he collected numerous reports from people who claimed to have experienced alien abductions. His books brought the subject to worldwide attention and influenced many later investigators.

Dr. David Jacobs (1942– )

Historian Dr. David Jacobs expanded upon Hopkins' work by conducting hundreds of interviews and hypnosis sessions with individuals who reported alleged alien abductions. He believed that recurring patterns found in independent testimonies deserved careful investigation. His research remains among the most influential—and most debated—in the field.

Dr. John E. Mack (1929–2004)

Dr. John Mack was a Harvard psychiatrist who interviewed many people reporting extraordinary experiences. While he approached the subject from a different perspective, he believed that many witnesses were describing experiences that had profoundly affected their lives, regardless of how those experiences were ultimately explained.

These three researchers helped shape much of the modern discussion surrounding alleged alien abductions. However, their methods and conclusions have also been criticised by psychologists and memory researchers, particularly regarding the reliability of memories recovered under hypnosis.

In the next section we will examine Dr. David Jacobs' investigative method in greater detail, as his work forms an important part of this study.

DR. DAVID JACOBS' INVESTIGATIVE METHOD

Among the researchers who used hypnotic regression, Dr. David Jacobs became one of the best known and most influential.

Unlike many investigators who focused mainly on UFO sightings, Dr. Jacobs concentrated on interviewing people who believed they had experienced alien abductions or periods of missing time.

His investigations usually began with lengthy interviews conducted while the witness was fully awake. He carefully documented the person's background, experiences, and reasons for believing something unusual had happened.

Only after these initial interviews would he sometimes use hypnotic regression to explore memories that the witness believed could not be consciously recalled.

Dr. Jacobs believed that many independent witnesses described remarkably similar experiences, even though they came from different backgrounds and had never met one another. He argued that these recurring patterns deserved careful investigation rather than immediate dismissal.

However, many psychologists and memory researchers have questioned the reliability of memories recovered under hypnosis. They argue that hypnosis can increase suggestibility, making it difficult to distinguish between genuine memories, imagination, dreams, and ideas unintentionally influenced by the hypnotist.

For this reason, Dr. Jacobs' methods remain both influential and controversial. Some researchers believe his work provides valuable evidence that deserves careful consideration, while others believe greater caution should be exercised when interpreting hypnotically recovered memories.

As with every subject examined in this book, our purpose is not to accept or reject Dr. Jacobs' conclusions without examination, but to evaluate the available evidence fairly and compare it with scientific research and the teaching of Scripture.

SCIENTIFIC STUDIES ON MEMORY

One of the most important questions in this investigation is: How reliable is human memory?

For many years, psychologists and neuroscientists have studied how memories are formed, stored, and recalled. Their research has shown that human memory is remarkable, but it is not like a video recording that captures every event exactly as it happened.

Instead, memory is a reconstructive process. Each time we remember an event, our brain rebuilds the memory using stored information, emotions, and later experiences. As a result, memories can sometimes change over time.

Researchers have found that stress, trauma, fear, suggestion, and the passage of time can all influence how people remember events.

This does not mean that every memory is inaccurate. Many memories are reliable and supported by independent evidence. However, scientific research has shown that human memory is not perfect and should be evaluated carefully, especially when investigating extraordinary claims.

For this reason, many psychologists recommend that memories recovered through hypnosis should be considered alongside other supporting evidence, rather than being accepted as proof on their own.

Understanding how memory works is essential before examining reports of alleged alien abductions. It helps us approach every claim with both an open mind and careful scientific investigation.

FALSE MEMORY RESEARCH

During the past several decades, psychologists have carried out extensive research into how false memories can develop.

A false memory is a memory that feels completely real to the person recalling it but does not accurately represent what actually happened.

Research has shown that memories can sometimes be influenced by suggestion, repeated questioning, imagination, discussions with other people, or exposure to misleading information after an event has occurred.

One of the best-known researchers in this field is psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Loftus. Her studies demonstrated that it is sometimes possible for people to develop sincere but inaccurate memories after being exposed to misleading suggestions or carefully worded questions.

These findings have had a significant impact on psychology and the legal system, where eyewitness testimony is often treated with caution unless supported by additional evidence.

This does not mean that every recovered memory is false. Rather, it highlights the importance of carefully examining all available evidence before accepting any extraordinary claim.

For this reason, many scientists recommend that hypnotically recovered memories should not be treated as independent proof. Instead, they should be compared with physical evidence, eyewitness testimony, documented facts, and other reliable sources whenever possible.

As we continue this investigation, we will apply the same principle to every UFO case examined in this book. Our aim is neither to accept nor dismiss a claim without evidence, but to follow the facts wherever they lead.

BIBLICAL EXAMINATION

The Bible does not specifically mention modern UFO sightings or alleged alien abductions. However, it does provide important principles for evaluating unusual experiences.

First, Christians are repeatedly warned not to accept every supernatural claim without careful examination.

The Apostle John wrote:

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God..." — 1 John 4:1

Jesus Himself warned that deception would increase before His return.

"Take heed that no one deceives you." — Matthew 24:4

The Apostle Paul also warned that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light.

"And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."— 2 Corinthians 11:14

These passages remind believers that not every extraordinary experience comes from God. Some experiences may have natural explanations, while others may involve spiritual deception.

This does not mean that every report of a UFO or an alien encounter should automatically be dismissed or accepted. Instead, every claim should be tested carefully, honestly, and prayerfully.

Throughout this book we will compare eyewitness testimony, historical evidence, scientific research, and the teaching of Scripture before reaching conclusions.

The Bible encourages believers to seek truth with wisdom, discernment, and humility, remembering that extraordinary claims require careful examination.

As followers of Christ, our final authority is not personal experience, popular opinion, or human tradition, but the Word of God.

CHAPTER SUMMARY

Hypnotic regression has played a significant role in the investigation of alleged alien abductions for more than fifty years.

Some researchers believe it can help recover memories that are not easily recalled during normal consciousness, while others warn that hypnosis may unintentionally influence memory and increase the risk of false recollections.

Scientific research has shown that human memory is complex and not always completely reliable. For this reason, memories recovered under hypnosis should be considered carefully and, whenever possible, compared with independent evidence.

The Bible also reminds us to test every experience, exercise discernment, and seek the truth with wisdom and humility rather than accepting extraordinary claims without examination.

As throughout this book, our aim is not to persuade readers to accept or reject any particular claim without evidence. Instead, we encourage every reader to examine the facts honestly, weigh the available evidence carefully, and compare every conclusion with the teaching of Scripture.

Having now examined hypnotic regression and the debate surrounding recovered memories, we are ready to investigate one of the most famous alleged alien-abduction cases ever reported.

In the next chapter we will examine the Travis Walton incident, where six eyewitnesses claimed to have seen Travis Walton struck by a beam of light before he disappeared for five days. We will carefully examine the eyewitness testimony, the police investigation, the supporting evidence, the criticisms, and the biblical perspective before asking one simple question:

What really happened?

LOOKING AHEAD

In the next chapter, we will examine one of the most famous and controversial UFO cases ever reported.

THE TRAVIS WALTON INCIDENT

On 5 November 1975, six forestry workers claimed they witnessed Travis Walton being struck by a brilliant beam of light before he mysteriously disappeared for five days.

What really happened?

Was this a genuine alien encounter, a misunderstanding, or is there another explanation?

Together, we will carefully examine the eyewitness testimony, the police investigation, the supporting evidence, the criticisms, and the biblical perspective before reaching our conclusions.

On the evening of 5 November 1975, seven forestry workers travelling through the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona reported seeing a brilliant unidentified object hovering above the trees. Moments later, Travis Walton was struck by what witnesses described as a powerful beam of light before mysteriously disappearing for five days. His remarkable account, together with the testimony of the six other witnesses, made this one of the most famous and debated alleged alien-abduction cases in modern history. In this chapter, Simon Brown carefully examines the eyewitness testimony, the investigation, the supporting evidence, the criticisms, and the biblical perspective, encouraging readers to examine the facts honestly before reaching their own conclusions.

CHAPTER 7

THE TRAVIS WALTON INCIDENT

What Really Happened in the Arizona Forest?

On the evening of 5 November 1975, seven forestry workers were driving home through the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest near Snowflake, Arizona, after completing a day's work.

As they travelled along a remote forest road, they claimed to have seen a brilliant glowing object hovering above the trees.

One of the men, Travis Walton, left the truck and walked towards the object for a closer look.

According to the six other workers, a powerful beam of light suddenly struck Walton, throwing him backwards.

Terrified, the men drove away before returning a short time later. When they came back, Travis Walton had disappeared.

For the next five days, one of the largest search operations in Arizona's history attempted to find him.

Then, just as mysteriously as he had vanished, Travis Walton reappeared alive.

He later claimed that he had awakened inside what he believed was an alien craft.

The Travis Walton incident remains one of the most famous and controversial UFO cases ever reported. Supporters believe the eyewitness testimony and subsequent investigations make it one of the strongest cases in UFO history. Critics argue that the events may be explained by misunderstanding, psychological factors, or deliberate fabrication.

In this chapter, we will carefully examine the evidence from both sides before asking one simple question:

What really happened?
THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

On the evening of 5 November 1975, seven members of a forestry crew were driving home after completing contract work in the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest near Snowflake, Arizona.

As they travelled along a remote forest road, the men noticed a bright object shining through the trees ahead of them.

Curious about what they were seeing, they stopped their truck for a closer look.

According to the witnesses, the object appeared to hover silently above a nearby clearing, emitting a brilliant light unlike anything they had seen before.

Travis Walton left the safety of the truck and began walking toward the object.

The remaining six men watched from inside the vehicle.

Moments later, they claimed a powerful beam of light suddenly shot from the object and struck Walton, throwing him backwards.

Believing their friend had been killed—or fearing they too might be in danger—the terrified men drove away from the scene.

After travelling a short distance, they stopped, overcame their fear, and decided to return.

When they arrived back at the clearing, Travis Walton had disappeared.

What followed would become one of the most controversial and heavily investigated cases in the history of UFO research.
THE SEVEN FORESTRY WORKERS

The events of 5 November 1975 were not reported by Travis Walton alone.

According to the official accounts, seven members of a forestry crew were present that evening as they travelled home after completing contract work in the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest.

The men were:

• Travis Walton

• Mike Rogers (Crew Leader)

• Steve Pierce

• Allan Dallis

• Dwayne Smith

• Ken Peterson

• Steve Mera (sometimes referred to as Steve or "Steve M.")

Each of these men later gave statements describing what they claimed to have witnessed.

Although some details varied—as is common in eyewitness testimony—the central account remained broadly consistent.

The witnesses reported seeing a brilliant object hovering above the trees.

They stated that Travis Walton approached the object before being struck by an intense beam of light.

Believing that their friend had been seriously injured or killed, the frightened men drove away from the scene before returning a short time later.

When they came back, Travis Walton had disappeared.

The disappearance immediately became a police matter, and both local authorities and volunteers began searching the surrounding forest.

The testimony of these six witnesses remains one of the principal reasons why the Travis Walton case continues to receive serious attention from both supporters and critics of UFO research.

In the next section, we will examine exactly what the witnesses claimed to have seen that evening and compare their testimony with the available evidence.
THE EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY

According to the witnesses, the object they saw was unlike any conventional aircraft they had ever observed.

They described it as a brilliant, glowing object hovering silently above a clearing in the forest.

Some estimated that it was approximately 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6 metres) in diameter, although estimates varied between witnesses.

The object reportedly emitted an intense bluish-white light that illuminated the surrounding trees and forest floor.

Curious about the unusual object, Travis Walton left the truck and walked towards it while the others remained inside the vehicle watching.

According to the six witnesses, as Walton approached, the object suddenly became brighter.

Moments later, they claimed that a powerful beam or burst of light struck him, causing his body to be thrown backwards.

Believing their friend had been seriously injured—or fearing for their own safety—the crew drove away in panic.

A short time later, overcome with concern, they returned to the location.

When they arrived back at the clearing, Travis Walton was gone.

Despite searching the immediate area, there was no sign of him.

The disappearance marked the beginning of one of the most unusual missing-person investigations in modern UFO history.

The obvious question now became:

If Travis Walton had disappeared, what did the police discover during their investigation?

THE POLICE INVESTIGATION BEGINS

When Travis Walton failed to return home, his disappearance quickly became a missing-person investigation.

The six remaining members of the forestry crew reported the incident to the authorities and explained what they claimed had happened in the forest.

Their extraordinary account naturally attracted immediate attention.

Law enforcement officers initially considered a number of possible explanations, including the possibility that Walton had been injured, become lost, or that a crime had been committed.

Over the following days, police officers, search-and-rescue teams, volunteers, tracking dogs, and even helicopters searched large areas of the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest.

Despite these extensive efforts, no trace of Travis Walton was found.

No body was discovered.

No signs of a struggle were reported.

No physical evidence clearly explained his disappearance.

As the days passed, public interest grew rapidly, and the unusual circumstances surrounding the case attracted increasing media attention.

Investigators also questioned the six witnesses repeatedly, carefully comparing their individual statements to determine whether their accounts remained consistent.

The central question facing investigators was simple:

Were these men telling the truth about what they believed they had witnessed, or was there another explanation for Travis Walton's disappearance?

Five days later, the mystery took another unexpected turn.

Travis Walton suddenly reappeared alive.

THE RETURN OF TRAVIS WALTON

After five days of searching, the mystery took an unexpected turn.

During the early hours of 10 November 1975, Travis Walton contacted his family from a telephone booth in Heber, Arizona, approximately 30 miles (48 kilometres) from the location where he had disappeared.

He appeared weak, exhausted, confused, and noticeably thinner than when he had vanished.

His brother-in-law immediately drove to collect him and later reported that Walton appeared physically and emotionally distressed.

Soon afterwards, Travis was reunited with his family and questioned by police officers, investigators, and medical personnel.

According to Walton, he had little memory of the five days he had been missing.

He later claimed that he had regained consciousness inside what he believed to be an unfamiliar craft, where he saw several unusual human-like beings.

Frightened and confused, he said he escaped from the room and briefly explored the strange environment before losing consciousness again.

When he finally awoke, he found himself beside a road near Heber, Arizona, with no clear memory of how he had arrived there.

His extraordinary account immediately attracted widespread media attention and divided public opinion.

Some believed that Walton's experience supported the possibility of an alien encounter.

Others argued that there were more conventional explanations for his disappearance and the experiences he later described.

Whatever the explanation, Travis Walton's return transformed the case from a missing-person investigation into one of the most famous and controversial UFO incidents ever reported.

The next question investigators faced was equally important:

What evidence existed to support—or challenge—the extraordinary claims made by Travis Walton and the six eyewitnesses?

THE POLYGRAPH EXAMINATIONS

One of the reasons the Travis Walton case continues to attract attention is that several of the witnesses underwent polygraph examinations, commonly known as lie detector tests.

Shortly after the incident, the six forestry workers agreed to be tested regarding the events they claimed to have witnessed.

According to reports, most of the men passed their examinations, leading some investigators to conclude that they sincerely believed the accounts they had given.

Supporters of the Travis Walton case have often pointed to these results as evidence that the witnesses were telling the truth as they understood it.

However, it is important to recognise the limitations of polygraph testing.

A polygraph does not determine whether a statement is objectively true or false. Instead, it measures physiological responses such as heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and skin conductivity while a person answers questions.

These responses may indicate stress or anxiety, but they cannot prove that an event actually occurred.

For this reason, polygraph evidence is viewed with caution in many courts and by many scientists. A person may pass a polygraph while sincerely believing something that is mistaken, just as an innocent person may fail because of nervousness or fear.

Nevertheless, the willingness of the witnesses to undergo testing, together with the reported results, remains one of the factors that supporters believe strengthens the Travis Walton case.

The polygraph examinations do not prove that an alien encounter occurred. However, they do suggest that the witnesses were generally consistent in the accounts they provided to investigators.

The question therefore remains:

If the witnesses believed they were telling the truth, what explanation best fits all of the available evidence?
THE ARGUMENTS IN SUPPORT OF THE TRAVIS WALTON CASE

For almost fifty years, the Travis Walton incident has remained one of the most widely discussed cases in UFO research.

Supporters of the case believe several factors distinguish it from many other alleged alien-abduction reports.

First, there were six independent eyewitnesses who all reported seeing a brilliant object in the forest and witnessing Travis Walton being struck by an intense beam of light.

Second, Travis Walton genuinely disappeared for five days. Despite an extensive search involving police officers, volunteers, search dogs, and helicopters, no trace of him was found until he unexpectedly reappeared.

Third, the witnesses were questioned repeatedly by investigators. Although some minor details varied, supporters argue that the central account remained remarkably consistent over time.

Fourth, several of the witnesses agreed to undergo polygraph examinations. While polygraph tests cannot prove that an event actually occurred, supporters believe the results suggest that the witnesses sincerely believed the accounts they gave.

Finally, Travis Walton has maintained essentially the same account of his experience for decades. He has written books, appeared in documentaries, and given numerous interviews, consistently defending his version of events.

Taken together, supporters argue that these factors make the Travis Walton incident one of the strongest and most credible cases in the history of UFO research.

However, critics remain unconvinced.

They argue that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and believe there are alternative explanations that should also be carefully considered.

To present a balanced investigation, we must now examine the main criticisms that have been raised against the Travis Walton case.
THE ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE TRAVIS WALTON CASE

Although many people consider the Travis Walton incident to be one of the strongest UFO cases ever reported, others remain unconvinced.

Sceptics argue that while the witnesses may have sincerely believed something unusual occurred, this does not necessarily prove that an alien encounter took place.

Some critics suggest that the event may have been the result of misunderstanding, misidentification, or an unusual natural phenomenon witnessed under difficult viewing conditions.

Others have proposed that fear, stress, and the excitement of the moment may have influenced how the witnesses interpreted what they saw.

Questions have also been raised about Travis Walton's account of the five days he was missing.

Critics point out that no independently verified physical evidence has ever been produced to demonstrate that he was taken aboard an extraterrestrial craft.

They also note that while polygraph examinations may indicate whether a person believes they are telling the truth, they cannot establish that the events being described actually occurred.

Some investigators have even suggested that the entire incident may have been a deliberate hoax, although supporters strongly reject this conclusion and argue that no convincing evidence has ever been produced to support such a claim.

Over the years, both supporters and critics have continued to debate the case, each pointing to different pieces of evidence to support their conclusions.

As with many extraordinary claims, the available evidence has been interpreted in different ways.

The challenge for every investigator is to examine all of the facts carefully, avoid jumping to conclusions, and remain willing to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

Before reaching our own conclusions, there is one final question to consider.

What does the Bible teach about extraordinary experiences such as this?

THE BIBLICAL EXAMINATION

Whatever conclusion a person reaches about the Travis Walton incident, Christians should examine every extraordinary claim in the light of Scripture.

The Bible acknowledges that unusual signs, visions, and supernatural events can occur. However, it also repeatedly warns believers not to accept every extraordinary experience without careful examination.

The Apostle John wrote:

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God..."
— 1 John 4:1

Jesus Himself warned His followers:

"Take heed that no one deceives you."
— Matthew 24:4

The Apostle Paul also reminded believers that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light.

"And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."
— 2 Corinthians 11:14

These warnings teach an important principle.

Not every unexplained experience is necessarily from God, and not every extraordinary event should immediately be assumed to involve extraterrestrial life.

Some reports may have natural explanations that have not yet been discovered.

Others may result from misunderstanding, psychological factors, or inaccurate interpretation.

Still others, if genuinely supernatural, should be carefully tested against the teaching of Scripture.

The purpose of this chapter has not been to prove or disprove Travis Walton's account.

Rather, it has been to examine the historical evidence honestly, consider both supporting and opposing arguments fairly, and encourage readers to investigate the facts for themselves.

Whatever our personal conclusions may be, Christians are called to seek truth with humility, wisdom, and discernment.

Our final authority is not eyewitness testimony, personal experience, public opinion, or sensational headlines.

Our final authority is the Word of God.
CHAPTER SUMMARY

Nearly fifty years after the events of 5 November 1975, the Travis Walton incident remains one of the most famous and debated cases in the history of UFO research.

Supporters point to the multiple eyewitnesses, the five-day disappearance, the extensive search operation, and the consistency of the witnesses' accounts as reasons for taking the case seriously.

Critics argue that while the witnesses may have sincerely believed they experienced something unusual, the available evidence does not conclusively demonstrate that an extraterrestrial event occurred.

As with many extraordinary claims, the evidence continues to be interpreted in different ways.

This chapter has not attempted to persuade readers to accept or reject Travis Walton's account without careful examination.

Instead, we have examined the historical facts, the eyewitness testimony, the investigation, the supporting arguments, the criticisms, and the biblical principles that should guide every Christian when evaluating extraordinary claims.

Whether the ultimate explanation proves to be natural, psychological, spiritual, or something not yet fully understood, the responsibility of every honest investigator remains the same.

We must examine the evidence carefully, avoid sensationalism, remain open to the facts, and test every claim in the light of God's Word.

The search for truth requires patience, humility, and a willingness to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

LOOKING AHEAD

In the next chapter, we will examine another remarkable case that received international attention.

THE THOMAS REED INCIDENT

Unlike the Travis Walton case, this account involves a family who claimed to have experienced repeated encounters over many years.

The Thomas Reed incident became one of the best-known multi-generational UFO cases in America and has been the subject of documentaries, investigations, and public debate.

This chapter will also include material from my own interview with Thomas Reed, allowing readers to hear directly from one of the central figures involved in the case.

As always, we will carefully examine the historical evidence, eyewitness testimony, supporting arguments, criticisms, and the biblical perspective before reaching our conclusions.
Chapter 8 poster illustrating the Thomas Reed UFO incident. A mysterious UFO hovers above a rural home at night while a family, historical documents, sketches, newspaper reports, and a forest scene represent one of America's best-known multi-generational UFO encounter cases. Includes the blog address and Research by Simon Brown.

The Thomas Reed incident is one of the most remarkable and controversial family UFO encounter cases ever reported in the United States. Over several years, members of the Reed family claimed to experience repeated encounters with unexplained aerial phenomena and alleged alien beings. Their story has been featured in books, documentaries, television programmes, and public investigations. In this chapter, Simon Brown examines the historical background, eyewitness testimony, supporting evidence, sceptical criticisms, his own interview with Thomas Reed, and the biblical principles for evaluating extraordinary claims.

CHAPTER 8
THE THOMAS REED INCIDENT

A Multi-Generational Encounter

The Thomas Reed incident is one of the most remarkable and controversial family UFO encounter cases ever reported in the United States.

Unlike many UFO reports that involve a single witness or a single event, the Reed family claimed to have experienced repeated encounters over several years.

Their story has attracted international attention through books, documentaries, television programmes, newspaper articles, and public investigations.

One of the unique features of this chapter is that it includes material from my own interview with Thomas Reed, allowing readers to hear directly from one of the central figures involved in the case.

As throughout this book, we will carefully examine the historical evidence, eyewitness testimony, supporting arguments, sceptical criticisms, scientific perspectives, and biblical principles before reaching our conclusions.
WHY THIS CHAPTER MATTERS

The Thomas Reed incident differs from many famous UFO cases.

Rather than involving a single unexplained event, the Reed family reported a series of encounters spanning several years.

Supporters argue that the consistency of the family's testimony, together with the number of reported witnesses and the long history of the case, deserves serious investigation.

Critics, however, suggest that alternative explanations may better account for the family's experiences.

For these reasons, the Thomas Reed case has become one of the best-known and most debated family encounter cases in modern UFO research.

Our purpose is not to persuade readers toward one conclusion, but to examine all of the available evidence as fairly and honestly as possible.
QUESTIONS THIS CHAPTER WILL ANSWER

• Who is Thomas Reed?

• What did the Reed family claim to experience?

• Why has this case received international attention?

• What evidence supports the family's account?

• What criticisms have sceptics raised?

• What did Thomas Reed tell me during my interview with him?

• What conclusions can reasonably be drawn from the available evidence?

• What guidance does the Bible provide when examining extraordinary experiences?
OUR APPROACH

As with every case examined in this book, we begin without assuming that the Reed family's claims are either true or false.

Instead, we will carefully compare eyewitness testimony, historical records, interviews, scientific research, sceptical analysis, and biblical teaching.

Our goal is neither to promote sensational claims nor to dismiss unusual experiences without investigation.

Rather, we seek to examine every piece of evidence carefully, encourage critical thinking, and follow the evidence wherever it leads.

Only after considering both the supporting evidence and the criticisms will we reach our conclusions.

WHO IS THOMAS REED?

Thomas Reed is an American who, together with members of his family, has claimed to have experienced a series of extraordinary encounters involving unidentified flying objects and alleged non-human beings.

According to the Reed family, these experiences began during Thomas's childhood and continued over several years.

Unlike many UFO cases involving a single witness, the Reed incident is unusual because several members of the same family reported witnessing unexplained events.

Over the years, the family's story has been featured in books, documentaries, television programmes, newspaper articles, and public discussions.

The case has attracted both strong support and strong criticism.

Supporters believe the consistency of the family's testimony deserves serious investigation.

Critics argue that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and believe alternative explanations should also be considered.

One of the unique aspects of this chapter is that it includes information from my own interview with Thomas Reed, allowing readers to hear directly from one of the principal witnesses involved in the case.
THE EVENTS BEGIN

According to Thomas Reed, the most famous events occurred during the late 1960s while he and members of his family were travelling through the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts.

The family claimed they repeatedly encountered strange lights and unusual aerial objects in the area.

On one occasion, they reported seeing a brilliantly illuminated object near the roadside before experiencing events they were unable to explain.

According to their testimony, periods of missing time followed, together with memories that later became central to the family's extraordinary claims.

Over the years, Thomas Reed has consistently maintained that these experiences were real and profoundly affected his life.

His account has become one of the best-known family encounter cases in modern UFO research.

To understand the case properly, we must first examine exactly what Thomas Reed and his family claimed happened on that remarkable night.
THE REED FAMILY'S ACCOUNT

According to Thomas Reed, the most significant encounter occurred on the evening of 1 September 1969 while he was travelling with members of his family through the Berkshire Mountains near Sheffield, Massachusetts.

Present in the vehicle were Thomas, his mother, his grandmother, and his younger brother.

As they drove along a quiet country road, they reported seeing an unusually bright object ahead of them.

The object appeared unlike any conventional aircraft and seemed to hover silently above the roadway.

According to the family's testimony, the vehicle suddenly lost power, and the surrounding area became unnaturally quiet.

The family later claimed that they experienced a period of missing time.

Thomas Reed has stated that he later remembered being inside a strange environment, encountering unusual beings, and experiencing events he could not explain by ordinary means.

Other members of the family also described unusual experiences, although not every person recalled the events in exactly the same way.

According to Thomas Reed, these encounters had a profound impact upon his life and the lives of his family for many years afterwards.

His account has remained largely consistent throughout numerous interviews, documentaries, and public appearances.

As with every case examined in this book, the important question is not simply what was claimed, but what evidence exists to support those claims.

We must now examine the historical investigation that followed.
THE INVESTIGATION

Following the Reed family's reports, the case gradually attracted the attention of UFO researchers, investigators, journalists, and documentary filmmakers.

Over the years, Thomas Reed gave numerous interviews describing the events that he and his family claimed to have experienced.

The case became one of the best-known family encounter reports in the United States and has been discussed in books, television documentaries, newspaper articles, and public lectures.

Supporters argue that the consistency of Thomas Reed's testimony over many years strengthens the credibility of his account.

Critics respond that consistency alone does not prove that extraordinary events actually occurred and maintain that alternative explanations should always be considered.

As public interest grew, the Thomas Reed case became one of the most recognised family UFO reports in modern history.

One of the unique features of this chapter, however, is that it does not rely solely upon published reports.

I had the opportunity to interview Thomas Reed personally, allowing readers to hear directly from one of the central figures involved in the case.

Before examining the supporting and opposing arguments, I believe it is important to allow Thomas Reed to explain his experiences in his own words.
THE THOMAS REED INTERVIEW

As part of my continuing research into UFOs and alleged alien abductions, I have collected and preserved a number of important interviews with researchers and eyewitnesses connected with the phenomenon.

One of these is a recorded interview with Thomas Reed, featured on my YouTube channel under the title:

"UFO and Alien Abductions – Interview with Thomas Reed and Caspar McCloud."

The interview was conducted by Pastor Caspar McCloud and forms part of my ongoing research archive into UFOs, alleged alien abductions, and the paranormal.

Throughout this chapter I will refer to statements made during that interview alongside published research, historical records, eyewitness testimony, scientific analysis, and the teaching of Scripture.

Readers are encouraged to watch the full interview, allowing them to hear Thomas Reed describe his experiences in his own words before considering the evidence presented in this investigation

THE EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THE CASE

Supporters of the Thomas Reed case believe several features distinguish it from many other reported UFO encounters.

First, the case involves multiple members of the same family rather than a single witness. The Reed family maintained that they experienced unusual events over a number of years, not simply during one isolated incident.

Second, Thomas Reed has consistently described his experiences during interviews, documentaries, and public appearances for many years.

Third, the case has attracted the attention of numerous investigators, researchers, journalists, and documentary filmmakers, resulting in one of the most extensively documented family encounter cases in the United States.

Supporters also point to the sincerity of the Reed family and the consistency of many aspects of their testimony over time.

For these reasons, many UFO researchers consider the Thomas Reed incident worthy of serious investigation.

However, as with every extraordinary claim, there are also important criticisms that must be carefully examined.
THE CRITICISMS OF THE CASE

Like many famous UFO cases, the Thomas Reed incident has generated considerable debate.

Critics argue that extraordinary claims require strong independent evidence and point out that personal testimony alone cannot establish that an extraterrestrial event occurred.

Some suggest that unusual experiences may have natural, psychological, or environmental explanations that have not been fully understood.

Others question whether memories recalled many years after the reported events can always be relied upon with complete certainty.

Sceptics also argue that although the Reed family's testimony is sincere, sincerity alone does not prove that the experiences occurred exactly as remembered.

These objections deserve careful consideration and remind us that every investigation should examine both the supporting evidence and the alternative explanations.

As throughout this book, our aim is neither to accept nor reject the case without examination, but to compare all of the available evidence fairly and honestly.

How should Christians evaluate reports of UFOs, alien encounters, and other extraordinary experiences? This biblical examination compares eyewitness testimony with the teachings of Scripture, including 1 John 4:1, Matthew 24:4, 2 Corinthians 11:14, Acts 17:11, and 1 Thessalonians 5:21. Rather than accepting or rejecting claims without investigation, readers are encouraged to test every experience carefully, seek truth with wisdom and discernment, and compare every conclusion with the Word of God. THE BIBLICAL EXAMINATION

The Thomas Reed incident raises an important question for every Christian.

If the Reed family genuinely experienced something beyond ordinary human explanation, what was it?

The Bible does not specifically describe modern UFO sightings or alleged alien abductions. However, it does provide important principles for evaluating extraordinary experiences.

The Apostle John wrote:

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God..."
— 1 John 4:1

Jesus also warned His followers:

"Take heed that no one deceives you."
— Matthew 24:4

Likewise, the Apostle Paul wrote:

"And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."
— 2 Corinthians 11:14

These passages remind believers that not every extraordinary experience comes from God.

Some reports may have entirely natural explanations that have not yet been discovered.

Others may result from misunderstanding, psychological factors, dreams, altered states of consciousness, or mistaken interpretation.

Still others, if genuinely supernatural, should be carefully tested against the teaching of Scripture.

Throughout history, the Bible records the existence of angels, fallen angels, demons, visions, dreams, and spiritual deception.

For this reason, Christians should be cautious before concluding that every unexplained encounter necessarily involves visitors from another planet.

Whatever explanation is ultimately correct, Scripture teaches believers to seek truth with humility, wisdom, prayer, and discernment.

Our responsibility is not to accept extraordinary claims uncritically, nor to reject them without investigation, but to examine every claim honestly in the light of God's Word.
CHAPTER SUMMARY

The Thomas Reed incident remains one of the most widely discussed family UFO encounter cases in modern history.

Supporters believe the family's long-standing testimony, together with the consistency of their accounts and the public attention the case has received, deserves careful consideration.

Critics argue that extraordinary claims require strong independent evidence and believe that natural, psychological, or environmental explanations should also be examined before concluding that the experiences involved extraterrestrial beings.

Throughout this chapter we have examined the Reed family's testimony, the historical investigation, the supporting arguments, the sceptical criticisms, and the biblical principles that should guide every Christian when evaluating extraordinary claims.

Rather than accepting or rejecting the case without examination, we have sought to compare the available evidence honestly and fairly.

Whatever conclusions readers ultimately reach, the Bible encourages us to test every claim carefully, seek wisdom, avoid deception, and examine all things in the light of God's Word.

The search for truth requires humility, patience, and a willingness to follow the evidence wherever it leads.
LOOKING AHEAD

In the next chapter we will investigate another fascinating aspect of the UFO phenomenon.

THE ALLEGED ALIEN MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS

Thousands of people around the world have claimed that, during alleged alien encounters, they experienced unusual medical examinations, physical procedures, or biological experiments.

Why do so many reports contain remarkably similar descriptions?

Could these similarities point to a common experience, or are there other explanations?

We will examine the eyewitness testimony, the published research, scientific and psychological explanations, and the biblical perspective before asking one important question:

What really lies behind these extraordinary claims?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THIS RESEARCH

Thank you for taking the time to read this investigation.

My name is Simon Brown, and for more than thirty years I have been researching some of the world's most controversial subjects, including the Bible, biblical archaeology, fulfilled prophecy, the Shroud of Turin, UFOs, alleged alien abductions, and the paranormal.

Throughout these investigations I have tried to follow one simple principle:

"Follow the evidence wherever it leads."

My purpose is not to promote sensational claims or dismiss extraordinary reports without careful examination.

Instead, I compare historical records, eyewitness testimony, scientific research, published investigations, and the teaching of Scripture, encouraging readers to examine the evidence for themselves.

Over the years I have built an extensive research archive containing books, documentaries, scientific papers, historical documents, and interviews with leading researchers and eyewitnesses.

Some interviews were conducted personally by me, while others were conducted by trusted colleagues, including Pastor Caspar McCloud. These interviews form part of my research archive and YouTube collection and are used throughout my investigations with full acknowledgement of the original interviewer.

My aim has always been to present the evidence honestly, fairly, and accurately, allowing readers to reach their own informed conclusions.

If you have found this research helpful, I invite you to continue exploring the hundreds of articles, photographs, archaeological discoveries, videos, and biblical studies available free of charge on my website.
