For 1000's of years people believed the earth was held up or supported by something,
 because they did not have the knowledge and technology we have today about gravity.

French dramatist Cyrano de Bergerac in chapter 5 of his The Other World The Societies and Governments of the Moon (published 2 years posthumously in 1657) quotes St. Augustine as saying "that in his day and age the earth floated on water like half of a sliced orange.From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. 

How did the prophet of God Job know 1000's of years ago that the earth free-floats in space?

 Because God told him in (Job 26:7) (God) hangeth the earth upon nothing. This proves the Holy Bible was inspired by the creator GOD. 

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Romans 1:20.
