• era

• one of a succession of ages

The basic meaning concerns time rather than the physical universe.

Even HELPS Word Studies explains it as:

"An age (era, time-span)."

This immediately raises an important question.

If the Greek word means "ages," why do many English translations read "worlds" or "universe"?

Comparing Other Greek Words

The New Testament contains several Greek words translated "world."

For example:

κόσμος (kosmos)

used in John 3:16:

"For God so loved the world..."

Or:

οἰκουμένη (oikoumenē)

used in Luke 4:5:

"all the kingdoms of the world."

Neither of these words appears in Hebrews 1:2.

Instead, the writer uses:

αἰῶνας (aiōnas)

a completely different word.

My Understanding

From my own study, I believe Hebrews 1:2 is speaking about God's purpose being accomplished through His Son in the present age and the ages to come, rather than describing Jesus personally creating the Genesis universe.

In my view, translating αἰῶνας simply as "ages" better reflects the Greek text and avoids importing an interpretation into the translation itself.

Readers may weigh the evidence and decide whether they agree with that conclusion.

The Greek word in Hebrews 1:2 is αἰῶνας (aiōnas).

Its primary meaning concerns ages, eras, or periods of time.

Whether it should also be understood to include the created order is a matter of interpretation.

Quick Facts

• Jesus does not say, "Glorify Me with the glory I had when I was already living beside You before the world existed."

• Throughout the Bible, God speaks of people, events, and purposes long before they become reality because they already exist in His foreknowledge and eternal plan.

• The Apostle Peter describes Jesus as being foreknown before the foundation of the world, yet made manifest only in these last times for our sake (1 Peter 1:20).

• Peter also teaches that Jesus was delivered according to God's definite plan and foreknowledge (Acts 2:23), demonstrating that God's purposes existed before their fulfilment in history.

• Later in the very same prayer, Jesus asks the Father to give His disciples the same glory that the Father had given Him (John 17:22). Yet no one suggests that the disciples personally existed before the creation of the world.

• Jesus also says that the Father loved Him before the foundation of the world (John 17:24), showing that God's love and purpose extend beyond human history.

• Only two verses earlier, Jesus clearly distinguishes Himself from His Father by praying:

"This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."

• Even after His resurrection, Jesus still calls the Father:

"My God and your God."
(John 20:17)

• Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is presented as the promised Messiah, foretold by the prophets, foreknown in God's eternal purpose, miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit, and sent into the world by His Father.

When Jesus prayed,

"Father, glorify Me in Your own presence with the glory that I had with You before the world existed,"
