Who Is the Alpha and the Omega?

Infographic examining the biblical title Alpha and Omega in Revelation 1:8, 1:11, 21:6 and 22:13, comparing the Greek text, manuscript evidence, Old Testament references, and biblical context to identify who bears this title.

Who Is the Alpha and the Omega?

Quick Facts

Many Christians believe that every occurrence of the title "Alpha and Omega" refers to Jesus Christ and therefore proves that Jesus is Almighty God.

But is that what the book of Revelation actually teaches?

This chapter carefully examines each of the four passages where the title appears and compares them with the surrounding context, the testimony of the Old Testament, and Jesus' own words.

The evidence may surprise you.

Introduction

One of the most frequently used arguments in favour of the Trinity is the claim that Jesus repeatedly calls Himself "the Alpha and the Omega."

Many popular Christian websites state that the title belongs exclusively to Jesus because only God can truly be called "the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

If this were true, it would deserve serious consideration.

If Jesus Himself clearly claimed to be the Alpha and the Omega in the same sense as Almighty God, every Christian should honestly examine that evidence.

For this reason, we will carefully examine all four passages where the title appears:

  1. Revelation 1:8
  2. Revelation 1:11
  3. Revelation 21:6
  4. Revelation 22:13

Rather than assuming the answer beforehand, let us follow Paul's advice:

"Test all things. Hold fast what is good."
(1 Thessalonians 5:21)

First, what does "Alpha and Omega" mean?

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet.

Omega is the last.

Together they express the idea of completeness—the beginning and the end.

The question is not what the title means.

The real question is:

Who does Revelation actually apply it to?

Revelation 1:8

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

The speaker is identified within the verse itself.

John tells us this is:

  • the Lord God
  • the Almighty

Jesus is never called "the Almighty" anywhere else in the New Testament.

This is one reason many commentators acknowledge that Revelation 1:8 naturally refers to God Himself, even where they differ about later passages.

Jesus also identifies His Father as:

"the only true God."

(John 17:3)

For these reasons, Revelation 1:8 is best understood as referring to Almighty God.

Revelation 1:11

The King James Version reads:

"I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last..."

However, these words are absent from many early Greek manuscripts and are omitted by numerous modern critical editions and translations.

Therefore Revelation 1:11 should not be used as evidence for Jesus calling Himself the Alpha and the Omega without first examining the manuscript evidence.

Revelation 21:6

Again we read:

"I am the Alpha and the Omega..."

Only one verse later the speaker says:

"I will be his God, and he shall be My son."

This language naturally identifies the speaker as God the Father.

Jesus never teaches that believers become His sons while He becomes their God.

Instead Jesus consistently teaches:

"My Father and your Father,

My God and your God."

(John 20:17)

Revelation 22:13

This passage has generated perhaps the greatest discussion.

To understand it properly we must begin where the chapter begins.

Revelation 22:6 tells us:

"The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent His angel..."

Throughout verses 6–15 the angel speaks on behalf of God.

Only later do we reach verse 16, where the speaker changes.

Jesus explicitly identifies Himself:

"I, Jesus, have sent My angel..."

Notice something remarkable.

Throughout Revelation Jesus repeatedly identifies Himself by titles such as:

  • the Son of Man
  • the Living One
  • the First and the Last
  • the Son of God
  • the Faithful Witness
  • the Beginning of God's creation
  • the Root and Offspring of David
  • the Bright Morning Star

Yet nowhere does Jesus plainly say:

"I am the Alpha and the Omega."

If this title were intended as one of Jesus' principal claims about His own identity, we might expect Him to identify Himself that way just as clearly as He identifies Himself by these other titles.

Revelation's Consistent Pattern

One striking feature throughout Revelation is the consistent distinction between God and Jesus.

For example:

"Worthy are You, our Lord and God...
for You created all things."

(Revelation 4:11)

Later John writes:

"The wrath of God the Almighty."

(Revelation 19:15)

Again:

"They shall be priests of God and of Christ."

(Revelation 20:6)

And finally:

"The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb."

(Revelation 21:22)

Throughout Revelation John consistently distinguishes:

  • God
  • the Lamb

rather than identifying them as the same person.

Conclusion

The purpose of this chapter is not simply to challenge a traditional interpretation but to encourage careful study of Scripture in its context.

After examining each of the four Alpha and Omega passages, I believe the biblical evidence points to the title belonging to Almighty God, while Jesus consistently identifies Himself using other titles that distinguish Him from His Father.

As with every chapter in this book, I encourage readers to examine the Scriptures for themselves, compare the oldest available manuscripts, and test every conclusion against the whole counsel of God's Word.

"Test all things. Hold fast what is good."
