STATE OF THE DEAD — STUDY RECAP

ARE THE DEAD ALIVE IN HEAVEN, OR ASLEEP AWAITING THE RESURRECTION?

Before continuing with Part 24, let us briefly recap the biblical evidence we have examined throughout this study so far.

The central question has been simple:

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE ACTUALLY TEACH HAPPENS WHEN A PERSON DIES?

Are the dead consciously alive in heaven, hell, Hades or some other spiritual realm?

Or does Scripture teach that the dead are truly dead — described as sleeping or resting — while awaiting the future resurrection?

THE FOUNDATION OF OUR STUDY

Throughout this study we have repeatedly found Scripture describing death as:

SLEEP.

REST.

SILENCE.

RETURNING TO DUST.

AND:

WAITING FOR RESURRECTION.

Ecclesiastes tells us:

“The dead know nothing...”

— Ecclesiastes 9:5

The Psalmist says:

“His spirit goes forth, he returns to his earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish.”

— Psalm 146:4

Daniel describes:

“those sleeping in the dust of the earth”

who will one day:

“AWAKE.”

— Daniel 12:2

Daniel himself was told:

“you will rest; and you will arise for your inheritance at the end of the days.”

— Daniel 12:13, BLB

JESUS CALLED DEATH “SLEEP”

When Lazarus died, Jesus said:

“Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep...”

— John 11:11, BLB

When the disciples misunderstood Him, Jesus explained plainly:

“Lazarus has died.”

— John 11:14, BLB

Jesus then told Martha:

“Your brother will rise again.”

— John 11:23, BLB

Martha answered:

“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.”

— John 11:24, BLB

This became one of the major foundations of our study:

DEATH.

↓

SLEEP.

↓

THE LAST DAY.

↓

RESURRECTION.

PAUL TAUGHT THE SAME RESURRECTION HOPE

Paul repeatedly described dead Christians as:

“THOSE HAVING FALLEN ASLEEP.”

— 1 Thessalonians 4:13–15, BLB

He did not tell grieving Christians that their dead relatives were already consciously alive in heaven.

Instead he pointed them toward the return of Jesus:

“THE DEAD IN CHRIST WILL RISE FIRST.”

— 1 Thessalonians 4:16, BLB

Then the living and resurrected believers will be:

“CAUGHT AWAY TOGETHER WITH THEM”

to meet the Lord.

— 1 Thessalonians 4:17, BLB

Paul therefore directs the Christian hope toward:

THE RETURN OF JESUS.

THE RESURRECTION.

AND:

IMMORTALITY.

WHEN DO BELIEVERS RECEIVE IMMORTALITY?

Paul tells us:

“For it behooves this perishable to put on imperishable, and this mortal to put on immortality.”

— 1 Corinthians 15:53, BLB

Notice:

THE MORTAL MUST:

“PUT ON IMMORTALITY.”

Immortality is therefore not simply assumed to be something every human being already possesses naturally.

Paul connects immortality with:

THE RESURRECTION

AND:

THE LAST TRUMPET.

— 1 Corinthians 15:51–54

THE DIFFICULT PASSAGES WE HAVE EXAMINED

Throughout this study we have also confronted the passages most frequently used to argue that the dead remain consciously alive.

We have examined:

In every case we have asked the same questions:

WHAT DOES THE TEXT ACTUALLY SAY?

WHAT DOES IT NOT SAY?

WHAT DO THE ORIGINAL HEBREW AND GREEK WORDS MEAN?

WHAT DOES THE IMMEDIATE CONTEXT SAY?

AND:

HOW DOES THE PASSAGE FIT WITH THE BIBLE'S CLEAR TEACHING ABOUT RESURRECTION?

THE THIEF ON THE CROSS

We examined Jesus' promise:

“Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

— Luke 23:43, BLB

We discovered that the ancient Greek text did not contain the modern comma that determines whether “today” modifies:

“I SAY TO YOU”

or:

“YOU WILL BE WITH ME.”

We also compared Jesus' statement after His resurrection:

“NOT YET HAVE I ASCENDED TO THE FATHER.”

— John 20:17, BLB

And we remembered what the thief himself requested:

“REMEMBER ME WHEN YOU COME INTO YOUR KINGDOM.”

— Luke 23:42, BLB

THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS

We examined Luke 16 carefully rather than automatically treating every detail as a literal map of the afterlife.

We considered:

THE PARABOLIC CONTEXT.

ABRAHAM'S BOSOM.

HADES.

THE GREAT CHASM.

THE RICH MAN'S FIVE BROTHERS.

MOSES AND THE PROPHETS.

AND:

THE FINAL WARNING:

“If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one should rise from the dead.”

— Luke 16:31, BLB

“ABSENT FROM THE BODY”

We examined 2 Corinthians 5 within Paul's complete argument.

Paul's great hope was not merely:

BECOMING DISEMBODIED.

He looked toward being:

“CLOTHED”

and toward mortality being:

“SWALLOWED UP BY LIFE.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:4, BLB

We compared this with Paul's great resurrection teaching in:

1 CORINTHIANS 15.

THE SPIRITS IN PRISON

We examined 1 Peter 3:18–20 carefully.

We concluded that Christ was:

PUT TO DEATH.

↓

MADE ALIVE.

↓

AND THEN WENT AND PROCLAIMED TO:

“THE SPIRITS IN PRISON.”

We did not identify these “spirits” as dead human souls.

Instead we examined their association with:

THE DAYS OF NOAH

and the wider biblical evidence concerning:

REBELLIOUS SPIRITUAL BEINGS.

THE SOULS UNDER THE ALTAR

We examined Revelation 6:9–11 within the symbolic and apocalyptic nature of Revelation.

The martyrs are:

“SLAIN.”

Their “souls” appear:

UNDER THE ALTAR.

Their:

“BLOOD”

cries for justice.

We compared this with God's words concerning Abel:

“The voice of the blood of your brother is crying to Me from the ground.”

— Genesis 4:10

Abel's blood did not need to be literally conscious in order to:

“CRY.”

The imagery represents:

INNOCENT BLOOD

CRYING TO GOD FOR:

JUSTICE.

“THE SPIRITS OF THE RIGHTEOUS”

We examined Hebrews 12:22–24.

We discovered that the writer tells Christians who were still alive:

“YOU HAVE COME”

to:

HEAVENLY JERUSALEM.

Therefore the passage cannot simply be treated as a literal description of physical location.

We also examined Hebrews 11, where the faithful:

“DIED IN FAITH”

while:

“NOT HAVING RECEIVED THE PROMISES.”

— Hebrews 11:13, BLB

And the chapter concludes that:

“not apart from us, they should be made perfect.”

— Hebrews 11:40, BLB

“DESTROY BOTH SOUL AND BODY”

Most recently we examined Matthew 10:28.

Jesus says God is able to:

“DESTROY BOTH SOUL AND BODY IN GEHENNA.”

— Matthew 10:28, BLB

This raises a serious problem for the doctrine that the human soul is naturally:

INDESTRUCTIBLE

AND:

IMMORTAL.

Jesus does not say God preserves the soul forever because it cannot be destroyed.

He explicitly uses the word:

“DESTROY.”

THE BIBLICAL PICTURE EMERGING SO FAR

After examining all these passages, a remarkably consistent pattern has emerged:

LIFE.

↓

DEATH.

↓

SLEEP / REST.

↓

THE RETURN OF JESUS.

↓

THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD.

↓

JUDGMENT.

↓

IMMORTALITY AND EVERLASTING LIFE FOR GOD'S PEOPLE.

Paul says:

“THE DEAD IN CHRIST WILL RISE FIRST.”

— 1 Thessalonians 4:16, BLB

And:

“THIS MORTAL”

must:

“PUT ON IMMORTALITY.”

— 1 Corinthians 15:53, BLB

The Christian hope is therefore not that:

WE NEVER REALLY DIE.

The Christian hope is that:

DEATH WILL NOT WIN.

GOD RAISED JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD.

AND THROUGH CHRIST:

THE DEAD WILL RISE.

BUT OUR INVESTIGATION IS NOT FINISHED

Several important passages remain.

We still need to examine:

“THE SPIRIT RETURNS TO GOD WHO GAVE IT.”
— Ecclesiastes 12:7

“TO DEPART AND TO BE WITH CHRIST.”
— Philippians 1:21–23

“THE SMOKE OF THEIR TORMENT GOES UP TO AGES OF AGES.”
— Revelation 14:9–11

And finally:

THE LAKE OF FIRE.

THE GREAT WHITE THRONE.

THE SECOND DEATH.

AND:

THE FINAL DESTINY OF THE UNSAVED.

— Revelation 20:10–15

Then we will bring the entire investigation together in our:

FINAL BIBLICAL SUMMARY.

So now let us continue.

PART 24 — “THE SPIRIT RETURNS TO GOD WHO GAVE IT”

DOES ECCLESIASTES 12:7 TEACH THAT A CONSCIOUS HUMAN SPIRIT GOES TO HEAVEN AT DEATH?

Ecclesiastes says:

“the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”

— Ecclesiastes 12:7

This verse is frequently understood to mean:

THE BODY DIES.

↓

THE CONSCIOUS SPIRIT LEAVES THE BODY.

↓

THE PERSON CONTINUES LIVING WITH GOD IN HEAVEN.

But is that actually what Ecclesiastes says?

To answer this, we must investigate:

THE HEBREW WORD RUACH.

THE CREATION OF MAN.

THE BREATH OF LIFE.

GENESIS 2:7.

ECCLESIASTES' OWN TEACHING ABOUT THE DEAD.

AND:

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS FOR THE:

“SPIRIT”

TO:

“RETURN TO GOD WHO GAVE IT.”

SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES.

COMPARE THE TRANSLATIONS.

EXAMINE THE ORIGINAL HEBREW AND GREEK.

TEST EVERY TRADITION.

FOLLOW THE BIBLICAL EVIDENCE WHEREVER IT LEADS.

PART 1 — WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE?

THE BIBLE’S LANGUAGE OF DEATH AND SLEEP

INTRODUCTION

What actually happens to us when we die?

This is one of the greatest questions mankind has ever asked.

Many Christians have been taught that death is not really death.

They have been taught that when a saved Christian dies, an immortal soul immediately leaves the body and continues consciously living in heaven with Jesus.

Many are also taught that the unsaved dead remain consciously alive in Hades, awaiting the final judgment.

I once accepted teachings like these myself.

But when we put aside traditions and begin searching the Scriptures, we must ask:

IS THIS REALLY WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES?

Before examining difficult passages such as the thief on the cross, the rich man and Lazarus, “absent from the body,” and Paul's desire to “depart, and to be with Christ,” we first need to establish something much more fundamental:

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE NORMALLY SAY HAPPENS WHEN A PERSON DIES?

What did Jesus call death?

What did the prophets call death?

And when did Jesus say the dead would live again?

Let us begin with the clearest Scriptures.

QUICK FACT 1 — THE BIBLE REPEATEDLY DESCRIBES DEATH AS SLEEP

One of the most important facts in this entire study is remarkably simple:

THE BIBLE REPEATEDLY COMPARES DEATH WITH SLEEP.

Consider Daniel's prophecy:

“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake...”
— Daniel 12:2, KJV

Notice exactly what Daniel says.

They:

“SLEEP IN THE DUST OF THE EARTH.”

And eventually they:

“SHALL AWAKE.”

This gives us a remarkably simple biblical picture:

DEATH → SLEEP

RESURRECTION → AWAKENING

They are not described here as consciously living in heaven or consciously suffering somewhere beneath the earth.

They are described as:

ASLEEP.

And one day:

THEY WILL AWAKE.

QUICK FACT 2 — JESUS HIMSELF CALLED DEATH “SLEEP”

We do not have to rely only upon the Old Testament.

Jesus used exactly the same language.

When Lazarus died, Jesus told His disciples:

“Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.”
— John 11:11, KJV

The disciples misunderstood Him.

They thought Lazarus was literally sleeping.

So Jesus explained exactly what He meant:

“Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.”
— John 11:14, KJV

This could hardly be clearer.

Jesus said:

“LAZARUS SLEEPETH.”

Then Jesus explained:

“LAZARUS IS DEAD.”

Therefore, in this passage:

SLEEP = DEATH.

And what was Jesus going to do?

AWAKEN HIM.

This gives us a beautiful biblical picture:

DEATH IS THE SLEEP.

RESURRECTION IS THE AWAKENING.

QUICK FACT 3 — MARTHA EXPECTED LAZARUS TO RISE “AT THE LAST DAY”

There is another extremely important detail in the story of Lazarus.

Jesus told Martha:

“Thy brother shall rise again.”
— John 11:23, KJV

Notice Martha's response:

“I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
— John 11:24, KJV

Martha did not answer:

“I know Lazarus is already alive in heaven.”

Her hope was:

THE RESURRECTION.

And when did she expect it?

“AT THE LAST DAY.”

Jesus then declared:

“I am the resurrection, and the life.”
— John 11:25, KJV

The emphasis is upon RESURRECTION.

Death is not presented as the believer's final victory.

RESURRECTION FROM DEATH IS.

QUICK FACT 4 — JESUS NEVER SAID LAZARUS WAS ALIVE IN HEAVEN

Think carefully about what happens in John chapter 11.

Lazarus had been dead for four days.

Yet Jesus never comforts Martha by saying:

“Lazarus isn't really dead. He is alive with God in heaven.”

Instead:

JESUS CALLS LAZARUS' DEATH “SLEEP.”

JESUS THEN SAYS PLAINLY THAT LAZARUS IS DEAD.

MARTHA EXPECTS HIM TO RISE “AT THE LAST DAY.”

Then Jesus goes to the tomb and cries:

“Lazarus, come forth.”
— John 11:43, KJV

What happened?

“And he that was dead came forth...”
— John 11:44, KJV

Notice those words:

“HE THAT WAS DEAD.”

The passage does not tell us that Lazarus' immortal soul came down from heaven and re-entered his body.

It tells us:

LAZARUS WAS DEAD.

JESUS CALLED HIM.

LAZARUS CAME FORTH.

LAZARUS LIVED AGAIN.

This is RESURRECTION.

QUICK FACT 5 — “THE DEAD KNOW NOT ANY THING”

Now consider one of the Bible's most direct statements concerning the dead:

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing...”
— Ecclesiastes 9:5, KJV

Please read those words again:

“THE DEAD KNOW NOT ANY THING.”

Ecclesiastes continues:

“Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished...”
— Ecclesiastes 9:6, KJV

And:

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”
— Ecclesiastes 9:10, KJV

Notice what is absent:

NO WORK.

NO KNOWLEDGE.

NO WISDOM.

The dead are not described here as continuing normal conscious existence somewhere else.

The Bible says:

“THE DEAD KNOW NOT ANY THING.”

PART 1 CONCLUSION

So what have we discovered from our first five Quick Facts?

DANIEL describes the dead as sleeping in the dust and eventually awakening.

JESUS describes Lazarus' death as sleep.

MARTHA expects Lazarus to rise “at the last day.”

LAZARUS is explicitly described as “dead.”

And ECCLESIASTES says:

“THE DEAD KNOW NOT ANY THING.”

Already we have a serious biblical question to consider.

If the dead are consciously alive somewhere else, why does Scripture repeatedly describe death as:

SLEEP?

Why must the dead:

AWAKE?

Why did Martha expect Lazarus to rise:

“AT THE LAST DAY”?

And why does Ecclesiastes explicitly say:

“THE DEAD KNOW NOT ANY THING”?

BUT THERE IS MUCH MORE EVIDENCE TO EXAMINE.

And we will examine where Jesus says the dead are when He finally calls them back to life.

QUICK FACT — DOES BEING CALLED “GOD” MEAN SOMEONE IS THE ONE TRUE GOD?

This is one of the most important distinctions in this entire study.

I believe there are a few passages in which Jesus can legitimately be understood as being called “God.”

But here is the crucial question:

DOES BEING CALLED “GOD” AUTOMATICALLY MEAN THAT JESUS IS THE ONE TRUE GOD — GOD ALMIGHTY?

NO.

The Bible itself shows that the word “god” can be applied to others without making those individuals THE ONE TRUE GOD.

Jesus Himself made this point.

He said:

“If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken—”

— John 10:35

Jesus was referring to Psalm 82:6:

“I said, ‘You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you.’”

Notice carefully:

GOD HIMSELF CALLED CERTAIN PEOPLE “GODS.”

Did this mean those people were YAHWEH, THE ALMIGHTY GOD?

Of course not.

They were called “gods” in a representative or authoritative sense, while THE ONE TRUE GOD remained their God.

This is extremely important when examining passages where Jesus may be called “God.”

Many readers see:

JESUS = GOD

and immediately conclude:

THEREFORE JESUS = THE ONE TRUE GOD ALMIGHTY.

But that conclusion does not automatically follow from the use of the word “God.”

We must ask:

IN WHAT SENSE IS JESUS BEING CALLED GOD?

PAUL MAKES THE DISTINCTION VERY CLEAR

Paul wrote:

“For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’—yet for us there is ONE GOD, THE FATHER... and one Lord, Jesus Christ...”

— 1 Corinthians 8:5–6

Notice Paul's distinction:

THERE ARE THOSE CALLED “GODS.”

BUT:

“FOR US THERE IS ONE GOD, THE FATHER.”

This is precisely the distinction I believe many Christians are overlooking.

JESUS MAY BE CALLED “GOD” — BUT WHERE IS HE CALLED “THE ONE TRUE GOD”?

This is the question I encourage every reader to investigate.

There are a small number of New Testament passages where Jesus is called, or may be understood as being called, “God.”

But where does Scripture call Jesus:

“THE ONE TRUE GOD”?

Where does Scripture call Jesus:

“GOD ALMIGHTY”?

Where does Jesus Himself ever say:

“I AM THE ONE TRUE GOD”?

Instead, Jesus prayed to His Father:

“And this is eternal life, that they know YOU, THE ONLY TRUE GOD, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

— John 17:3

Notice the distinction:

THE FATHER:

“YOU, THE ONLY TRUE GOD”

JESUS:

“JESUS CHRIST WHOM YOU HAVE SENT.”

THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE WE MUST NOT MISS

Being called:

“GOD”

is not necessarily identical to being:

“THE ONE TRUE GOD.”

Scripture itself demonstrates this because others were called “gods.”

Therefore, even if Hebrews 1:8 is translated:

“YOUR THRONE, O GOD...”

we still cannot simply stop at the word “God” and conclude:

THEREFORE JESUS IS GOD ALMIGHTY.

We must continue reading.

Because the very next verse says to the Son:

“Therefore GOD, YOUR GOD, has anointed you...”

— Hebrews 1:9

And this brings us to the decisive question:

IF JESUS IS THE ONE TRUE GOD ALMIGHTY, HOW CAN THE ONE TRUE GOD HAVE A GOD?

Jesus Himself said:

“I ascend to my Father and your Father, and MY GOD and your God.”

— John 20:17

This is why I believe understanding the biblical difference between someone being called “god” and identifying THE ONE TRUE GOD is absolutely essential to understanding Hebrews 1:8–9.

Or did Paul repeatedly identify the ONE GOD as THE FATHER, while distinguishing Jesus Christ as God’s Son, Lord, Messiah and mediator?

Rather than beginning with a later theological doctrine, let us begin with Paul’s own words.

QUICK FACT 1 — PAUL SAID THERE IS “ONE GOD”

Paul wrote:

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5

Notice carefully that Paul identifies two parties:

ONE GOD

and

ONE MEDIATOR — CHRIST JESUS

A mediator stands between parties.

Paul does not say:

“There is one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”

Instead, he distinguishes the ONE GOD from the man Christ Jesus, who is the mediator between God and mankind.

This raises an important question:

If Jesus is Himself the one God in this statement, between whom is Jesus mediating?

QUICK FACT 2 — PAUL IDENTIFIED THE “ONE GOD” AS THE FATHER

Paul becomes even more specific:

“Yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ...”
— 1 Corinthians 8:6

Look carefully at Paul’s words:

ONE GOD = THE FATHER

ONE LORD = JESUS CHRIST

Paul does not identify the “one God” here as three persons.

He explicitly says:

“ONE GOD, THE FATHER.”

At the same time, Paul gives Jesus the exalted title “one Lord.”

The Father and Jesus are both central to Paul’s faith, but Paul distinguishes them rather than identifying both as the one God.

QUICK FACT 3 — PAUL AGAIN SAID “ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL”

Paul wrote:

“One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
— Ephesians 4:5–6

Again Paul identifies:

ONE LORD

and

ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL.

Notice also Paul’s extraordinary statement that the one God and Father is:

“OVER ALL.”

Paul’s language is remarkably consistent.

The ONE GOD is repeatedly identified as THE FATHER.

QUICK FACT 4 — PAUL DESCRIBES THE “ONLY SOVEREIGN”

Now consider one of the most remarkable passages in Paul’s writings:

1 Timothy 6:15–16.

Paul speaks of:

“the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see.”

Four expressions deserve very careful attention:

1. ONLY SOVEREIGN

2. KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS

3. WHO ALONE HAS IMMORTALITY

4. WHOM NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN OR CAN SEE

Who is Paul describing?

That is the question we need to examine from Scripture rather than simply assuming the answer.

QUICK FACT 5 — WHAT DOES THE GREEK ACTUALLY SAY?

The Greek wording behind 1 Timothy 6:15 includes:

βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων

King of those reigning as kings

and:

κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων

Lord of those exercising lordship.

This is naturally expressed in English as:

“KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

The Greek construction emphasizes supremacy.

This individual stands above every king and every lord.

That agrees with the preceding description:

“THE BLESSED AND ONLY SOVEREIGN.”

LOOKING AHEAD TO PART 2

But Paul has not finished.

In Part 2 we will examine one of the most important statements in this entire passage:

“WHO ALONE HAS IMMORTALITY.”

We will then compare this with Jesus’ remarkable statement that:

But is that really what Paul meant?

Who was Paul referring to?

Or was Paul referring to two persons:

AND

The key question is:

Paul repeatedly distinguishes between:

GOD THE FATHER

AND

For example:

“Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.”

The question every Bible student should examine is:

Search the Scriptures.

Examine the context.

Compare the passages.

Follow the evidence wherever it leads.

HOW DOES A FALSE GOD AND A FALSE CHRIST HEAR AND SAVE?

A Biblical Examination of Christian Deception, the One True God and the One True Christ

THE DEVIL DECEIVES THE WHOLE WORLD

The Bible gives us an extraordinary warning in Revelation 12:9:

“And the great dragon was thrown out, the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, deceiving the whole inhabited world.”

Think carefully about those words: “DECEIVING THE WHOLE INHABITED WORLD.”

Does Christianity somehow stand completely outside this warning? Can Christians also be deceived?

Jesus gives us a very serious warning in Matthew 24:24:

“For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.”

Notice those words: “EVEN THE ELECT.”

Therefore, no Christian should ever simply assume: “I am a Christian, therefore I cannot possibly be deceived.”

Jesus Himself warned us about religious deception. In fact, His warning tells us that deception can become so powerful that even those who consider themselves God's people must remain watchful.

This is why every Christian—including me—should continually examine what we believe against the Word of God.

CHRISTIANITY TODAY IS ENORMOUSLY DIVIDED

Look at Christianity throughout the world today.

There are tens of thousands of Christian denominations and rites when counted globally. We should be fair about what this statistic means: it does not mean that there are tens of thousands of completely different theological systems, because many denominations are divided geographically, organizationally or administratively.

Nevertheless, the central fact remains undeniable: Christianity is enormously divided.

Christian churches and denominations disagree about some of the most important questions imaginable:

Who is God? Who is Jesus Christ? What is the Holy Spirit? What is salvation? What happens when we die? What is hell? What is baptism? What is the Gospel? Did Jesus personally exist before His birth? Did Jesus create the universe? Is Jesus Almighty God? Is Jesus Michael the archangel? Is God one person or three persons? Is the Father the Son?

These teachings cannot all be correct where they directly contradict one another.

If one denomination says God is three persons and another says God is not three persons, both statements cannot be true in the same sense.

If one group says Jesus is Almighty God and another says Jesus is not Almighty God, both cannot be correct.

If one group says Jesus existed before His birth as Michael the archangel while another rejects this completely, both cannot be correct.

So we must seriously ask:

COULD THE ENEMY HAVE SUCCEEDED IN BRINGING ENORMOUS DECEPTION AND CONFUSION EVEN INTO CHRISTIANITY?

Could Revelation 12:9 apply much more widely than many Christians would like to believe?

If Satan is described as “deceiving the whole inhabited world,” surely Christians should not automatically assume that they are completely immune from deception.

THREE VERY DIFFERENT CHRISTIAN TEACHINGS

Consider just three well-known Christian traditions.

Traditional Trinitarian Christianity teaches that there is one God existing as three distinct persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Oneness Pentecostalism rejects the traditional three-person Trinity and understands the Father, Son and Holy Spirit differently, generally identifying them as manifestations of the one God rather than three distinct divine persons.

Jehovah's Witnesses reject the Trinity and distinguish Jesus from Almighty God, but teach that Jesus existed before His human life as Michael the archangel.

These teachings cannot all be correct where they contradict one another.

This demonstrates something extremely important:

SINCERITY DOES NOT GUARANTEE TRUTH.

There can be sincere, loving and devoted people within completely different denominations who nevertheless hold contradictory beliefs.

A person can sincerely believe something with all their heart and still be mistaken.

Therefore, our final authority cannot simply be:

“My church teaches it.”

“My pastor told me.”

“My parents believed it.”

“My denomination has always taught it.”

“Millions of Christians believe it.”

“This is what Christians have believed for centuries.”

Our question must always be:

WHAT DOES THE WORD OF GOD ACTUALLY TEACH?

ONLY ONE CONTRADICTORY TEACHING CAN BE TRUE

This is something we cannot escape simply by saying that every denomination is Christian.

Where two teachings directly contradict each other, they cannot both be true.

Of course, different denominations can agree about many things. They may all contain sincere believers, and they may share many biblical teachings.

But if they teach contradictory things concerning the identity of God and Christ, those contradictory teachings cannot all represent the one truth.

This raises a very serious question:

IS THERE REALLY ONE TRUE FAITH?

The New Testament speaks of “one faith” (Ephesians 4:5), and Jesus prayed that His followers would be one.

Yet today Christianity is divided into countless organizations, traditions and theological systems.

Surely this should make us humble rather than confident.

Instead of automatically assuming, “My denomination must be right,” perhaps every one of us should ask:

“Could I have been deceived?”

That is a question I have had to ask myself.

I KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE DECEIVED

I am not writing this article as somebody looking down upon Trinitarians or Christians belonging to other denominations.

I was deceived myself.

For approximately TEN YEARS I believed in the Trinity.

I sincerely believed it was true.

I did not wake up every morning thinking I was following a false doctrine. I believed I was following biblical Christianity.

But when I was eventually shown biblical evidence challenging the Trinity, something happened very quickly.

My eyes were opened to questions and Scriptures that I had never properly considered.

Instead of simply asking, “What does the Trinity teach?” I began asking a much more important question:

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE ITSELF ACTUALLY SAY?

Once I began examining the evidence in that way, I became convinced that the Trinity was not what Jesus and His apostles taught.

However, not everything changed immediately.

Other beliefs took considerably longer for me to reconsider.

For example, it took me several years of further study before I became convinced that Jesus did not personally exist as a pre-human divine or angelic being before His miraculous conception and birth.

This taught me something extremely important:

IT CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT TO ADMIT, “I WAS WRONG.”

COULD PRIDE KEEP CHRISTIANS DECEIVED?

Sometimes we have believed something for ten, twenty, thirty, forty or even fifty years.

Our family believes it. Our friends believe it. Our church believes it. Our pastor preaches it. Our favourite theologians defend it. Perhaps generations of our family have believed it.

Eventually those beliefs can become part of our identity.

Then somebody presents biblical evidence against them.

What happens?

Unfortunately, sometimes instead of opening the Bible and carefully examining the evidence, the immediate response is:

“HERETIC!”

But calling somebody a heretic does not prove that their biblical argument is wrong.

This raises another uncomfortable question:

COULD PRIDE PREVENT CHRISTIANS FROM ADMITTING THAT THEY HAVE BEEN DECEIVED?

Nobody enjoys saying: “I was wrong.”

It can be even harder for a pastor, preacher or Bible teacher to say: “I have taught thousands of people something that I now believe was incorrect.”

But surely truth must matter more than our pride, reputation, denomination or previous teaching.

If Scripture proves me wrong tomorrow, then I must change.

SCRIPTURE MUST NOT CHANGE TO ACCOMMODATE ME.

Our attitude should be:

If I am wrong, show me from Scripture.

If you are wrong, allow Scripture to show you.

If we are both wrong, may God correct us both.

We should never be afraid of biblical evidence.

Truth has nothing to fear from investigation.

DO NOT SIMPLY BELIEVE ME

And I want to make something very clear before continuing this study.

I am not asking anyone simply to believe Simon Brown.

TEST WHAT I SAY.

Search the Scriptures.

Check the context.

Compare translations.

Examine the original Hebrew and Greek where necessary.

Test your pastor.

Test your denomination.

Test your favourite theologian.

Test my research.

And most importantly:

TEST YOUR OWN BELIEFS.

Because I know from personal experience that it is entirely possible to sincerely believe something for years and later become convinced from Scripture that you were wrong.

That realization should not produce pride.

It should produce humility.

And it should make every one of us determined to discover:

WHO IS THE ONE TRUE GOD?

AND WHO IS THE TRUE CHRIST WHOM HE SENT?

The Shocking Trinitarian Claim – Unless Jesus Is God, He Cannot Be the Savior!

This Bible study examines the Trinitarian argument that Jesus could not be the Savior, Messiah or Lamb of God unless He were God Himself. Scripture declares that the Father sent His Son to be the Savior of the world and identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The central question is whether the Bible ever says that God's own Son was not sufficient to die for our sins unless He was God Himself.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not suggesting that all Trinitarian Christians believe or express the teaching quoted above in this way. The statement shown in the image represents the teaching of the particular Trinitarian source being quoted. My purpose is to examine this claim biblically and compare it carefully with what Scripture says about God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Lamb of God.

THE SHOCKING TRINITARIAN CLAIM: If Jesus is not God, He could not be the Savior, the Messiah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world John 1:29. leave everything else the same?

One argument frequently made by some Trinitarian teachers is this:

“Unless Jesus is God, He could not die for the sins of the whole world.”

Or expressed another way:

“If Jesus were only the Son of God and not God Himself, His sacrifice could never be sufficient to save humanity.”

But stop and consider what this argument is really saying.

Is it saying that God's own Son was not good enough to be the sacrifice for our sins?

Is it saying that the perfect, sinless Messiah whom God Himself sent into the world was somehow insufficient to become the Lamb of God?

That is an extraordinary claim—because this is not how Scripture describes the saving work of Jesus Christ.

GOD HIMSELF CHOSE HIS SON TO BE OUR SAVIOR

The Bible does not tell us that Jesus had to be God in order to save us.

Instead, Scripture tells us that God sent His Son to be our Savior:

“The Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.” — 1 John 4:14

Notice carefully who sends whom.

The Father sends.
The Son is sent.

God Himself determined that His Son was sufficient for this great work.

John 3:16 does not say that God became His own Son and gave Himself.

It says:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son...”

The gift was God's Son.

JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD

When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he declared:

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” — John 1:29

Think about those words:

THE LAMB OF GOD

Jesus is God's appointed Lamb.

God chose Him.

God sent Him.

God anointed Him.

And Jesus willingly gave His life in obedience to His Father.

If God Almighty Himself determined that His Son was the perfect Lamb who could take away the sins of the world, who are we to say that the Son was not good enough unless He was actually God Himself?

JESUS WAS THE SINLESS MESSIAH

Jesus did not need to be sinful humanity's Savior because He was God.

Scripture emphasizes that He was without sin.

“He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.” — 1 Peter 2:22

He was the perfect, obedient Son of God.

Peter confessed:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” — Matthew 16:16

Notice what Peter confessed.

He did not say:

“You are God the Son.”

He said:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

And Jesus blessed Peter for that confession.

GOD RAISED HIS SON FROM THE DEAD

The apostles repeatedly preached that God raised Jesus from the dead.

Peter proclaimed:

“This Jesus God raised up, to which we all are witnesses.” — Acts 2:32

Again, Scripture distinguishes between:

God — the One who raised Jesus

and

Jesus — the Messiah whom God raised.

The Gospel message preached by the apostles was not that God Himself died and raised Himself.

Their proclamation was that God's Messiah died for our sins and that God raised Him from the dead.

WAS GOD'S OWN SON “NOT GOOD ENOUGH”?

This is where the argument becomes deeply troubling.

If someone says:

“Unless Jesus is God, He is not good enough to die for our sins,”

then we must ask:

Who decided whether Jesus was good enough?

Was it later theologians?

Was it church councils?

Or was it God Almighty Himself?

God chose His Son.

God sent His Son.

God declared His approval of His Son.

God appointed His Son as Messiah.

God accepted His sacrifice.

And God raised His Son from the dead.

Surely God has the authority to determine whether His own Son's sacrifice was sufficient.

HOW GOD AND HIS SON MUST GRIEVE AT SUCH A CLAIM

Think about what God gave for us.

He gave His beloved Son.

And think about what Jesus willingly endured:

The rejection.

The humiliation.

The beating.

The suffering.

The cross.

And finally, death.

Jesus gave everything in obedience to his Father and out of love for humanity.

How grievous, then, is the suggestion that God's own Son was somehow “not good enough” to save us unless He was actually God Himself?

Scripture never diminishes Jesus in this way.

Quite the opposite.

It gives Jesus the greatest possible honour as God's uniquely begotten Son, His chosen Messiah, His sinless servant, and the Lamb whom God provided for our salvation.

THE BIBLE TELLS US WHY JESUS IS OUR SAVIOR

John explains the purpose of his Gospel in remarkably straightforward words:

“But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” — John 20:31

Notice what John wanted us to believe:

Jesus is the Christ.

Jesus is the Son of God.

And through believing in Him:

we may have life in His name.

John does not say:

“These things are written so that you may believe Jesus is God, because unless Jesus is God He cannot save you.”

That is not what the text says.

THE GLORY BELONGS TO BOTH GOD AND HIS SON

The biblical message is beautiful:

God loved the world.

God sent His Son.

Jesus obeyed His Father.

Jesus gave His life for us.

Jesus became the Lamb of God.

God raised Him from the dead.

God exalted Him.

And through God's Son, we receive forgiveness and eternal life.

We do not honour Jesus by changing “the Son of God” into something Scripture requires us to call “God the Son.”

And we certainly do not honour Him by suggesting that being God's perfect, sinless and uniquely begotten Son was somehow not good enough to accomplish the salvation God Himself appointed Him to accomplish.

QUICK FACT CONCLUSION

The claim:

“UNLESS JESUS IS GOD, HE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO DIE FOR OUR SINS”

is a theological argument—not a statement found anywhere in Scripture.

The Bible instead declares:

“The Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.” — 1 John 4:14

And:

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” — John 1:29

If Almighty God chose His Son to be the Messiah, the Savior and the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world, then God's Son was unquestionably good enough.

Jesus does not have to be God Himself for His sacrifice to have value. His sacrifice has value because God appointed His sinless Son to give His life for us—and Jesus faithfully accomplished the work His Father gave Him to do.

Jesus said:

“I and my Father are one.” — John 10:30

This verse is often used as evidence that Jesus and his Father are one God. But notice something very important:

Jesus did not say:

“I and my Father are one God.”

He simply said:

“I and my Father are one.”

QUICK FACT 1 — Jesus Explained His Meaning

Only a few verses later, Jesus explained his relationship with his Father:

“The Father is in me, and I am in the Father.” — John 10:38

Jesus therefore described a profound unity between himself and his Father.

QUICK FACT 2 — Jesus Used the Same Language About His Disciples

In John 17, Jesus prayed that his followers would also become one:

“That they may be one, even as we are one.” — John 17:11

And:

“That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you.” — John 17:21

Obviously, Jesus was not asking for all his disciples to become one literal person or one God.

His prayer shows that “one” can describe profound unity, fellowship and shared purpose while those involved remain distinct.

QUICK FACT 3 — Where Is the Third Person in John 10:30?

If John 10:30 is being used specifically as a description of the three-person Trinity, an obvious question arises:

Where is the Holy Spirit?

Jesus mentions only:

1. Himself — the Son
2. His Father

There is no third person mentioned in John 10:30.

This does not by itself prove that the Holy Spirit cannot be a distinct person; it does show that John 10:30 alone is not a statement defining a three-person Godhead.

QUICK FACT 4 — What About John 1:1?

John 1:1 speaks of:

“the Word”

and:

“God.”

Whatever interpretation one adopts concerning the Word, the verse itself does not explicitly present three persons or give a three-person definition of God.

The Holy Spirit is not mentioned in John 1:1.

Therefore, John 1:1 cannot, by itself, provide the complete doctrine later called the Trinity.

QUICK FACT 5 — What About Heaven’s Great Throne?

The same question can be asked when examining biblical visions of God's throne.

If someone claims that Father, Son and Holy Spirit must always be understood as three coequal divine persons, we should carefully examine how Scripture actually describes the heavenly throne rather than assuming that later theological terminology appears in the text.

The important question is:

Who does Scripture actually identify as sitting on the throne, who is distinguished from Him, and how is the Holy Spirit described?

Those passages deserve to be examined individually rather than having the Trinity read into them beforehand.

QUICK FACT CONCLUSION

When Jesus said:

“I and my Father are one,”

he did not say:

“I and my Father are one God.”

And his prayer that his disciples might be “one, even as we are one” provides important context for understanding what this language of unity can mean.

Furthermore, John 10:30 does not mention the Holy Spirit at all, and neither does John 1:1.

So these verses may be used as part of a broader theological argument for the Trinity, but neither verse, standing alone, states the doctrine that God is three persons—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—in one God.

This Quick Facts study examines Matthew 28:19 and the claim that it proves the doctrine of the Trinity. It considers the surviving Greek manuscript evidence, Eusebius, the Didache and the repeated references to baptism in the name of Jesus in Acts. Even if Matthew 28:19 is accepted exactly as it appears in modern Bibles, the verse does not state that God is three persons, does not call the Father, Son and Holy Spirit one God, and does not use the word Trinity.

QUICK FACTS: DOES MATTHEW 28:19 PROVE THE TRINITY?

Matthew 28:19 is one of the most frequently quoted Bible verses in discussions about the Trinity.

Jesus tells his disciples:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19

At first sight, we clearly see three mentioned:

The Father.
The Son.
The Holy Spirit.

Because of this, Matthew 28:19 is often presented as evidence for the doctrine of the Trinity.

But what does the verse actually say?

QUICK FACT 1 — The Threefold Wording Is Found in the Surviving Greek Manuscripts

We should begin with an important fact.

The surviving Greek manuscripts containing Matthew 28:19 support the familiar wording:

“the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Therefore, we should not claim as an established textual fact that these words are a later forgery.

There are historical questions surrounding the verse, but the manuscript evidence presently available supports the traditional reading.

QUICK FACT 2 — Eusebius Sometimes Quoted Matthew 28:19 Differently

An interesting historical question comes from the fourth-century church historian Eusebius of Caesarea.

In some of his writings, Eusebius quotes Jesus' command in a shorter form involving making disciples “in my name.”

This has caused some researchers to question whether Eusebius knew an earlier form of Matthew 28:19.

However, this does not prove that our present Matthew 28:19 was altered. Eusebius also knew the longer wording.

Therefore, his writings are interesting evidence to investigate, but they should not be presented as conclusive proof of a forgery.

QUICK FACT 3 — The Didache Contains the Threefold Baptismal Formula

Another important piece of evidence comes from the Didache, an early Christian document.

It gives instructions for baptism using:

“the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

This demonstrates that the threefold baptismal wording was known very early in Christian history.

Again, this is important evidence when investigating Matthew 28:19.

QUICK FACT 4 — Acts Repeatedly Describes Baptism in the Name of Jesus

Here is where the biblical evidence becomes especially interesting.

When we leave Matthew 28:19 and examine actual baptisms recorded in Acts, we repeatedly find baptism associated with the name of Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:38

“Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ...”

Acts 8:16

“They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Acts 10:48

“He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.”

Acts 19:5

“They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

These passages were also central to the argument in my earlier research.

So there is a legitimate question to investigate:

Why does Acts repeatedly describe baptism in the name of Jesus rather than repeating the exact threefold wording of Matthew 28:19?

That is an interesting biblical question, but it does not require us to conclude that Matthew 28:19 is a forgery.

QUICK FACT 5 — Matthew 28:19 Never Uses the Word “Trinity”

Now we come to an extremely important point.

Read Matthew 28:19 carefully.

Where does Jesus say:

“God is a Trinity”?

He doesn't.

Where does Jesus say:

“The one God consists of three persons”?

He doesn't.

Where does Jesus say:

“The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three co-equal, co-eternal persons who together constitute the one God”?

He doesn't.

Those statements are simply not in Matthew 28:19.

The verse mentions the Father, Son and Holy Spirit together. That fact should be accepted.

But mentioning three does not, by itself, define their relationship or establish that all three are persons within one God.

QUICK FACT 6 — The Father and Jesus Are Frequently Mentioned Together Without Making Them One God

The New Testament repeatedly distinguishes God the Father from Jesus Christ.

For example:

“Yet for us there is one God, the Father... and one Lord, Jesus Christ...” — 1 Corinthians 8:6

Jesus himself prayed:

“That they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” — John 17:3

And Jesus identified the greatest commandment by quoting Israel's confession:

“Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” — Mark 12:29

These passages must also be considered when determining who the Bible identifies as the one God.

QUICK FACT 7 — Mentioning Father, Son and Holy Spirit Together Does Not Automatically Establish the Trinity

This is the crucial distinction.

Matthew 28:19 certainly mentions:

The Father
The Son
The Holy Spirit

But the doctrine of the Trinity makes a much more specific claim.

It teaches that there is one God who exists eternally as three distinct persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — each fully God, yet there is only one God.

Matthew 28:19 itself never explains this.

It does not call the three “one God.”

It does not call them “three persons.”

It does not say that each is equally Almighty God.

It does not say that the Son is God the Son.

And it does not define the Holy Spirit as God the Holy Spirit.

Those theological conclusions have to be argued from other passages and theological reasoning. They cannot simply be read into Matthew 28:19.

QUICK FACT CONCLUSION

There are genuine historical questions surrounding Matthew 28:19, particularly concerning Eusebius, early Christian baptismal practice, the Didache, and the repeated references to baptism in the name of Jesus throughout Acts.

But the surviving Greek manuscript evidence supports the familiar wording of Matthew 28:19.

Therefore, we do not need to claim that Matthew 28:19 is a forgery.

Instead, we can accept the verse exactly as it stands and ask a much simpler question:

Does Matthew 28:19 actually say that God is three persons?

No.

It mentions the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, but it never says that these three are one God, never calls them three persons in one God, and never uses the word Trinity.

Therefore, even if every word of Matthew 28:19 is completely genuine and exactly what Jesus said, Matthew 28:19 by itself does not prove the doctrine of the Trinity.

That is the real point.

Read what the Scripture actually says — and be equally careful not to make it say something that it does not say.
