John 6:62 — Does “Ascending to Where He Was Before” Prove Jesus Lived in Heaven Before His Birth?

Jesus teaching His disciples in John 6:62 about the Son of Man ascending to where He was before.

Jesus teaching His disciples beside the Sea of Galilee, illustrating John 6:62 and the question of what He meant by the Son of Man “ascending to where He was before.” Research by Simon Brown.

JOHN 6:62 — DOES “ASCENDING TO WHERE HE WAS BEFORE” REALLY PROVE JESUS LIVED IN HEAVEN BEFORE HIS BIRTH?

What Did Jesus Really Mean by “Going Up to Where He Was Before”?

John 6:62 Quick Facts infographic examining what Jesus meant by the Son of Man “going up to where He was before,” including the Greek word anabainō and the resurrection context.

Detailed John 6:62 Bible research infographic examining Jesus’ words about the Son of Man “going up to where He was before,” the Greek word anabainō, the resurrection and life context of John 6, and the traditional pre-existence interpretation. Research by Simon Brown.

John 6:62 is frequently presented as one of the clearest statements that Jesus personally existed in heaven before He was born.

Jesus said:

“Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?”
— John 6:62

The traditional interpretation seems simple:

Jesus previously lived in heaven with God. He came down from heaven to earth. Therefore, when Jesus spoke about “ascending to where he was before,” He must have meant returning to the heavenly place where He personally lived before His birth.

But is that actually what Jesus said?

Does John 6:62 say:

“What if you see me returning to heaven where I lived before I was born?”

No.

Those words are not in the verse.

And when we examine the Greek, the immediate context, the repeated resurrection language throughout John 6, and Jesus' statement immediately afterward that “the Spirit gives life,” there is another interpretation that deserves serious consideration.

Could Jesus have been speaking about His coming death and resurrection?

Let us examine the evidence.

FIRST, WHAT DOES JOHN 6:62 ACTUALLY SAY?

The Greek text reads:

ἐὰν οὖν θεωρῆτε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀναβαίνοντα ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον;

Transliterated:

ean oun theōrēte ton huion tou anthrōpou anabainonta hopou ēn to proteron?

The crucial words are:

ἀναβαίνοντα ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον

anabainonta hopou ēn to proteron

Approximately:

“GOING UP / ASCENDING WHERE HE WAS BEFORE.”

Notice what the Greek does not say.

It does not say:

“ascending back to heaven.”

It does not say:

“returning to heaven.”

It does not say:

“where I lived before I was born.”

Most importantly:

THE WORD “HEAVEN” DOES NOT APPEAR IN JOHN 6:62.

That does not by itself prove that heaven cannot be what Jesus meant.

But neither can “heaven” simply be inserted into the verse and then the inserted idea be used as proof that Jesus personally lived there before His birth.

The destination represented by “where he was before” has to be determined from the context.

WHAT DOES ANABAINŌ MEAN?

The Greek word behind “ascending” is:

ἀναβαίνω — ANABAINŌ

The word can mean:

to go up, come up, rise, ascend.

But anabainō does not inherently mean:

“TO ASCEND BACK TO HEAVEN.”

The New Testament uses this same verb for many kinds of upward movement.

Jesus went up onto a mountain.

Jesus came up out of the water following His baptism.

Plants grew up from the ground.

Zacchaeus climbed up a tree.

Therefore, the English translation “ascending” is legitimate, but we must not allow the English word to make the Greek say more than it actually says.

Anabainō tells us about upward movement.

The context must tell us where and in what sense.

JOHN 6:62 MUST NOT BE REMOVED FROM JOHN 6:60–63

This is where the interpretation becomes especially interesting.

Jesus did not suddenly make an isolated statement about pre-existence in verse 62.

There is a conversation taking place.

We therefore need to read the verses together.

JOHN 6:60 — “THIS IS A HARD SAYING”

After hearing Jesus' teaching, many of His disciples said:

“This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”

Why were they struggling?

Because Jesus had been speaking in extraordinary language.

He had described Himself as:

THE BREAD THAT CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN.

He had spoken about:

EATING HIS FLESH

and:

DRINKING HIS BLOOD.

Clearly, we are dealing with language that requires interpretation.

Jesus was not instructing His disciples literally to eat pieces of His physical body and drink His physical blood.

The disciples were struggling to understand what He meant.

JOHN 6:61 — “DOES THIS CAUSE YOU TO STUMBLE?”

Jesus knew that His disciples were grumbling.

He therefore asked:

“Does this cause you to stumble?”

And immediately He continued:

“Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?”
— John 6:62

But Jesus did not stop there.

The very next words are extremely important.

JOHN 6:63 — “THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE”

Jesus continued:

“It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.”

Notice the language:

“THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE.”

And:

“THE WORDS THAT I SPEAK TO YOU ARE SPIRIT, AND ARE LIFE.”

Why should this matter when interpreting the previous sentence?

Because resurrection and restoration to life have already been repeatedly discussed in this same chapter.

RESURRECTION APPEARS THROUGHOUT JOHN 6

Jesus repeatedly speaks about resurrection in John 6.

John 6:39

“…I should lose nothing of all those he has given me, but should raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:40

“…I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:44

“…I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:54

“…I will raise him up at the last day.”

Four times in this discourse Jesus explicitly speaks about people being raised up.

Therefore, resurrection is not an idea imported from somewhere else in Scripture merely to create an alternative explanation for John 6:62.

RESURRECTION IS ALREADY PART OF THE CONTEXT OF JOHN 6.

And then, immediately after verse 62, Jesus says:

“THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE.”

That deserves serious consideration.

READ JOHN 6:60–63 AS ONE CONTINUOUS THOUGHT

Consider the progression.

VERSE 60

The disciples say:

“This is a hard saying.”

VERSE 61

Jesus asks:

“Does this cause you to stumble?”

VERSE 62

Jesus asks what they would think if they saw the Son of Man:

“going up/ascending where he was before.”

VERSE 63

Jesus immediately explains:

“THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE.”

and:

“THE WORDS THAT I SPEAK TO YOU ARE SPIRIT, AND ARE LIFE.”

Why should verse 62 be removed from this sequence and automatically interpreted as a statement about Jesus' life in heaven before His birth?

There is another possibility.

WAS JESUS SPEAKING ABOUT HIS RESURRECTION?

Consider what was about to happen to Jesus.

Jesus was alive upon the earth when He spoke these words.

He would later be killed.

He would be buried.

He would then be raised from the dead.

After His resurrection, Jesus would once again be:

ALIVE UPON THE EARTH

and would appear to His disciples.

Could this explain:

“the Son of Man going up to where he was before”?

Under this interpretation:

WHERE WAS JESUS BEFORE HIS DEATH?

Alive upon the earth.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?

He would die and be buried.

WHAT WOULD GOD THEN DO?

Raise Him from the dead.

WHERE WOULD JESUS THEN BE?

Once again alive upon the earth, appearing to His disciples.

In other words:

DEATH → RESURRECTION → RESTORATION TO LIFE

This makes Jesus' very next statement particularly interesting:

“THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE.”

DOES JOHN 6:63 EXPLICITLY SAY THE SPIRIT WOULD RESURRECT JESUS?

We must be precise.

No.

John 6:63 does not literally say:

“God's Spirit will raise me from the dead.”

Jesus says:

“The Spirit gives life.”

Connecting those words specifically with Jesus' resurrection is therefore an interpretation drawn from the surrounding context.

But exactly the same standard must be applied to the traditional interpretation.

John 6:62 does not literally say:

“I am returning to heaven where I consciously lived before my birth.”

That is also an interpretation.

So the question is not:

Which interpretation contains no interpretation at all?

The question is:

WHICH INTERPRETATION BEST EXPLAINS JESUS' WORDS IN THEIR CONTEXT?

SCRIPTURE CONNECTS GOD'S SPIRIT WITH RESURRECTION LIFE

There is another interesting biblical connection.

Paul later writes:

“But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
— Romans 8:11

Notice the concepts:

Jesus raised from the dead.

The Spirit.

Giving life to mortal bodies.

Romans 8:11 does not prove by itself what John 6:62 means, because Paul is writing in another context.

But it demonstrates that connecting Spirit + giving life + resurrection is thoroughly biblical.

Likewise, John 5:21 says:

“For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires.”

Again we find:

RAISING THE DEAD → GIVING LIFE.

Therefore, when John 6 repeatedly discusses resurrection and Jesus immediately says “the Spirit gives life,” the possibility that resurrection is relevant to verse 62 cannot simply be dismissed.

JESUS HAD BEEN SPEAKING FIGURATIVELY

We must also remember what produced the controversy in the first place.

Jesus had said:

“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves.”
— John 6:53

Nobody should interpret this woodenly literally.

Jesus' words require spiritual understanding.

Indeed, Jesus Himself subsequently says:

“The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.”

This is extremely relevant to another expression used throughout John 6:

“I CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN.”

Does that expression necessarily describe a conscious person physically travelling from heaven to Mary's womb?

Or can “from heaven” describe Jesus' divine origin—His being from God, sent by God, authorized by God and uniquely begotten through God's miraculous action?

We have already examined that question in detail in our companion study:

John 6:38 — How Did Jesus Come Down From Heaven?

READ THE JOHN 6:38 COMPANION STUDY

“FROM HEAVEN” DOES NOT ALWAYS REQUIRE LITERAL TRAVEL FROM HEAVEN

John himself provides an important example.

John the Baptist said:

“A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.”
— John 3:27

Something being “from heaven” can therefore identify its divine source.

Jesus certainly came from God.

The question is what that expression means.

Jesus had no human father.

Luke records the angel telling Mary:

“The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.”
— Luke 1:35

Jesus' origin was uniquely from God.

He was God's Son.

He was sent by God.

His authority came from God.

His words came from God.

His works were given by God.

His mission originated with God.

Therefore, saying Jesus came from God does not settle by itself the separate question of whether Jesus consciously lived beside God in heaven before His conception.

That question must be established from Scripture.

BUT WHAT ABOUT “WHERE HE WAS BEFORE”?

This is understandably the most difficult part of John 6:62.

Jesus says:

“…where he was before.”

The traditional interpretation understands this to mean:

HEAVEN — WHERE JESUS PERSONALLY LIVED BEFORE HIS BIRTH.

But notice again:

Jesus does not actually identify “where” as heaven in this verse.

The resurrection interpretation understands the expression differently.

Before Jesus' death He was:

ALIVE UPON THE EARTH.

He would then die.

He would be buried.

He would subsequently come up/rise from death and once again be:

ALIVE UPON THE EARTH.

The disciples would actually see Him again.

Thomas would see Him.

Peter would see Him.

Mary Magdalene would see Him.

The other disciples would see Him.

Only later would Jesus ascend to His Father.

Therefore, the expression “where he was before” does not by itself prove that the location was Jesus' pre-human residence in heaven.

That is precisely the point that needs to be demonstrated rather than assumed.

BUT JESUS REALLY DID ASCEND TO HEAVEN

Absolutely.

Nothing in this study denies Jesus' eventual ascension.

After His resurrection, Jesus ascended to His Father.

Acts 1 records this clearly.

The question is much narrower:

IS JOHN 6:62 TALKING ABOUT THAT ASCENSION IN A WAY THAT PROVES JESUS PREVIOUSLY LIVED IN HEAVEN BEFORE HIS BIRTH?

Those are two different questions.

Interestingly, Acts 1:9, in describing Jesus being taken up, does not use anabainō itself.

That fact does not prove John 6:62 means resurrection.

But it does demonstrate why anabainō should not be treated as a technical Greek term meaning “Christ's ascension back into heaven.”

THERE IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT PROBLEM WITH “GOING BACK”

If Jesus personally lived alongside God in heaven before His birth, then came to earth, we might expect Jesus—when later speaking explicitly about His departure to God—to describe Himself as:

“GOING BACK TO GOD”

or:

“RETURNING TO THE FATHER.”

This makes John 13:3 and John 16:28 particularly important.

JOHN 13:3 — “GOING TO GOD”

John 13:3 says that Jesus knew:

“…that he came from God, and was going to God.”

The important Greek expression is:

ὑπάγει πρὸς τὸν θεόν

hypagei pros ton theon

Jesus is described as:

GOING TO GOD.

Some English translations make the idea more explicit by translating this as “returning to God” or “going back to God.”

But there is no separate Greek word corresponding to “back” in that phrase.

That distinction matters.

JOHN 16:28 — “I GO TO THE FATHER”

This passage is even more striking because these are Jesus' own words:

“I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.”
— John 16:28 KJV

The Greek says:

πορεύομαι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα

poreuomai pros ton patera

That is:

“I GO TO THE FATHER.”

Again, there is no separate word meaning:

“BACK.”

Yet some translations render the expression:

“I am going back to the Father.”

That may represent how the translators understand the overall sentence, but “back” is interpretive rather than an independently stated word in the Greek phrase.

And that raises an important question.

IF JESUS MEANT “I AM RETURNING TO WHERE I LIVED BEFORE,” WHY NOT SAY SO?

Consider the argument carefully.

If Jesus were explicitly teaching:

“Before I was born I personally lived with God in heaven. I left that heavenly existence, came to earth, and now I am returning to the place where I previously lived,”

then John 13:3 and John 16:28 would have been very natural places to state it clearly.

But what do we actually find?

John 13:3:

GOING TO GOD.

John 16:28:

GOING TO THE FATHER.

Not explicitly:

“going BACK to God.”

Not explicitly:

“RETURNING to the Father.”

Not explicitly:

“returning to where I lived before my birth.”

This does not by itself disprove personal pre-existence.

Someone who believes in pre-existence can reasonably argue that coming from the Father and subsequently going to the Father implies a return.

But that is precisely why we must distinguish:

WHAT THE TEXT ACTUALLY SAYS

from:

WHAT A THEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION INFERS FROM THE TEXT.

WE HAVE ALREADY INVESTIGATED JOHN 13:3 AND JOHN 16:28

This translation question deserves more attention than we can give it here.

For that reason, we have already produced a separate detailed investigation:

John 13:3 & John 16:28 – Did Jesus Really Say He Was “Returning” or “Going Back” to God?

In that study we compare the Greek wording with different English translations and examine whether “returning” and “back” are actually expressed in the Greek.

READ THE FULL JOHN 13:3 & JOHN 16:28 STUDY

This evidence fits naturally alongside John 6:62.

NOW PUT ALL FOUR PASSAGES TOGETHER

This gives us an interesting sequence in John's Gospel.

JOHN 6:38

Jesus says:

“I CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN.”

JOHN 6:62

Jesus speaks about:

“GOING UP/ASCENDING WHERE HE WAS BEFORE.”

JOHN 13:3

Jesus is:

“GOING TO GOD.”

JOHN 16:28

Jesus says:

“I GO TO THE FATHER.”

Now compare those actual expressions with the theological reconstruction sometimes placed upon them:

“I consciously lived in heaven alongside God before my birth. I literally travelled down from heaven into the world, and now I am returning back to the heavenly location where I personally lived before I was born.”

Those are not the actual words of any of these four verses.

That does not automatically make the theological interpretation wrong.

But it means that the interpretation must be demonstrated from the evidence, rather than being inserted into the verses and then treated as though Jesus explicitly said it.

JOHN 20:17 GIVES US JESUS' ACTUAL ASCENSION LANGUAGE

After Jesus had genuinely died and genuinely been raised from the dead, He told Mary Magdalene:

“Don’t hold me, for I haven’t yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brothers, and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
— John 20:17

Here the destination is explicit.

Jesus is ascending:

TO HIS FATHER.

And Jesus identifies that Father as:

“MY GOD AND YOUR GOD.”

Notice that even when Jesus explicitly speaks about His coming ascension to the Father, He does not say:

“I am returning to the place where I lived before I was born.”

He says:

“I AM ASCENDING TO MY FATHER.”

That is what the text actually gives us.

MATTHEW AND LUKE MUST ALSO BE ALLOWED TO SPEAK

Our interpretation of John should not be developed in isolation from the other Gospels.

Matthew and Luke explicitly describe Jesus' miraculous conception and birth.

Luke tells us why the child would be called the Son of God:

“The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.”
— Luke 1:35

Matthew likewise records Jesus' conception through God's miraculous action upon Mary.

Mark begins with Jesus as an adult and does not contain a conception narrative.

Importantly, Mark also does not explicitly tell us that Jesus personally lived in heaven before His birth.

John contains the passages most frequently used to establish that conclusion.

Therefore, those Johannine passages deserve careful examination rather than being interpreted through an assumption made beforehand.

WHAT ABOUT THE TRADITIONAL PRE-EXISTENCE INTERPRETATION?

We should represent it fairly.

Many Christian interpreters understand John 6:62 as referring to Jesus' eventual ascension to heaven.

Under that interpretation:

“where he was before” means heaven.

Jesus therefore existed there before His earthly ministry.

His “coming down from heaven” describes His descent into the world.

His “ascending” describes His return to heavenly glory.

This interpretation also connects John 6 with passages such as John 1:1–14, John 8:58 and John 17:5.

That is a coherent theological interpretation and should not be misrepresented.

But there is still an important distinction:

JOHN 6:62 ITSELF DOES NOT SAY “HEAVEN.”

Nor does it say:

“WHERE I LIVED BEFORE MY BIRTH.”

Those ideas come from interpreting the verse within a wider pre-existence framework.

The purpose of this investigation is to ask whether that framework is required by John 6 itself.

I do not believe it is.

JOHN 6:62 CANNOT SETTLE THE PRE-EXISTENCE QUESTION BY ITSELF

Even if someone ultimately concludes from other passages that Jesus personally pre-existed His birth, John 6:62 should not be quoted as though Jesus plainly declared:

“I lived in heaven before I was born.”

He did not say that.

The actual statement is:

“THE SON OF MAN GOING UP/ASCENDING WHERE HE WAS BEFORE.”

The meaning of “where he was before” must therefore be interpreted.

And John 6 gives us substantial reasons for considering resurrection:

Jesus repeatedly speaks of raising the dead.

His disciples are struggling with difficult and figurative language.

Jesus asks whether His words cause them to stumble.

He speaks of the Son of Man going up to where He was before.

And immediately afterward declares:

“THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE.”

That sequence should not be ignored.

JOHN 6:38 AND JOHN 6:62 BELONG TOGETHER

This is why our two studies should be read together.

John 6:38 concerns:

COMING DOWN.

John 6:62 concerns:

GOING UP.

If “coming down from heaven” can describe Jesus' heavenly origin—His coming from God, being sent by God and receiving His mission and authority from God—then we should not automatically make the opposite expression mean that Jesus is returning to a literal pre-human residence.

Both expressions must be interpreted from John's language and the wider biblical testimony.

CONCLUSION — WHAT DID JESUS ACTUALLY SAY?

John 6:62 is often presented as though Jesus said:

“I LIVED IN HEAVEN BEFORE I WAS BORN AND NOW I AM GOING BACK THERE.”

But those are not Jesus' words.

Jesus spoke about the Son of Man:

“GOING UP/ASCENDING WHERE HE WAS BEFORE.”

The Greek word anabainō does not itself mean:

“return to heaven.”

The word “heaven” is not even present in John 6:62.

Furthermore, resurrection and life are repeatedly discussed throughout John 6.

Jesus speaks four times about raising people at the last day.

His disciples then stumble over His difficult language.

Jesus asks what they would think if they saw the Son of Man going up to where He was before.

And His very next statement is:

“THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE.”

For these reasons, I believe there is a serious contextual case that Jesus was speaking about His coming death and resurrection—His being restored from death to life and appearing again where He had previously been—rather than making a straightforward declaration about returning to a heavenly life He supposedly experienced before His birth.

John 13:3 and John 16:28 add another important consideration.

When Jesus actually speaks about going to God and going to the Father, the Greek does not require the additional English ideas “going back” or “returning.”

None of this means that one verse alone settles every question about the origin and pre-existence of Jesus.

John 1:1–14, John 8:58, John 17:5 and other passages deserve their own detailed examination.

But neither should John 6:62 be made to say more than it says.

DOES JOHN 6:62 ACTUALLY SAY JESUS LIVED IN HEAVEN BEFORE HIS BIRTH?

NO.

That conclusion must be inferred.

And when John 6:62 is read in its immediate context—with resurrection, Spirit, life and figurative language all surrounding it—the traditional pre-existence interpretation is not the only interpretation that deserves examination.

READ WHAT JESUS ACTUALLY SAID.

EXAMINE THE CONTEXT.

AND LET SCRIPTURE INTERPRET SCRIPTURE.

If God Cannot Die, Who Really Died on the Cross?

Quick Facts study asking: Can God become a man and die, as Jesus did? Examining whether the immortal God can die and what Scripture says about Jesus as a man and the Son of God.

A detailed biblical research infographic examining the question: Can God become a man and die, as Jesus did? It compares Scriptures describing God as immortal with passages identifying Jesus as a man, the Son of Man and the Son of God who died and was raised from the dead by God.

QUICK FACTS: CAN GOD BECOME A MAN AND DIE, AS JESUS DID?

IF GOD CANNOT DIE, BUT JESUS DIED, WHAT DOES THAT TELL US ABOUT JESUS?

There is one question concerning the identity of Jesus that every Christian should seriously consider:

CAN GOD ALMIGHTY DIE?

This is not merely a philosophical question.

It goes directly to the heart of the Gospel because Christianity depends upon one absolutely essential event:

JESUS CHRIST REALLY DIED FOR OUR SINS.

Paul tells us:

1 CORINTHIANS 15:3 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.”

Therefore, Jesus could not merely appear to die.

Nor can his death be reduced to something happening merely to his physical body while the actual person of Jesus remained alive elsewhere.

The Gospel declares:

CHRIST DIED.

He was buried.

And God raised him from the dead.

So if God Almighty is inherently immortal and cannot die, yet Jesus genuinely did die, we have an extremely important question to answer:

WAS JESUS GOD ALMIGHTY — OR THE MORTAL SON OF THE IMMORTAL GOD?

Let us examine the biblical evidence.

JESUS WAS A MAN

The New Testament repeatedly identifies Jesus as a man.

Jesus himself said:

JOHN 8:40 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“But now you seek to kill Me, a man who has spoken to you the truth, which I heard from God.”

Notice carefully what Jesus says.

He identifies himself as:

“A MAN”

and distinguishes himself from:

“GOD”

from whom he heard the truth.

Paul makes the distinction equally clear:

1 TIMOTHY 2:5 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Paul identifies two:

ONE GOD

and

THE MAN CHRIST JESUS.

Jesus is the mediator between God and humanity.

The mediator is not the God to whom he mediates.

JESUS WAS THE SON OF MAN

Jesus repeatedly called himself:

THE SON OF MAN.

For example:

MATTHEW 20:28 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“Even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus therefore identifies himself as the Son of Man who would give his life.

Now compare this with what Scripture says about God:

NUMBERS 23:19

“God is not a man… nor a son of man…”

The contrast deserves serious consideration.

God is not a man.

Jesus was a man.

God is not a son of man.

Jesus repeatedly called himself the Son of Man.

If we begin with Scripture rather than a later theological formula, this distinction is difficult to ignore.

JESUS REALLY DIED

Now we reach the central issue.

Jesus did not merely lose consciousness.

Jesus did not merely abandon his physical body.

JESUS DIED.

Paul summarizes the Gospel:

1 CORINTHIANS 15:3–4 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

Look carefully at the sequence:

CHRIST DIED.

CHRIST WAS BURIED.

CHRIST WAS RAISED.

The person who died is the person who was subsequently raised.

Scripture does not say:

“Only the human nature of Christ died.”

It says:

“CHRIST DIED.”

GOD, HOWEVER, IS IMMORTAL

Now compare the death of Jesus with Paul's description of God.

1 TIMOTHY 6:16 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

Paul describes God as:

“the only One having immortality…”

Immortality means being not subject to death.

This presents us with the fundamental question:

IF GOD CANNOT DIE, HOW COULD GOD DIE ON THE CROSS?

Jesus died.

God is immortal.

Therefore, saying simply:

“JESUS IS GOD”

creates a question that must be answered rather than assumed away.

THE TRADITIONAL “TWO NATURES” ANSWER

Traditional Trinitarian theology recognizes this difficulty.

It therefore explains that Jesus possessed two natures:

a divine nature

and

a human nature.

The usual explanation is that Jesus died according to his human nature, while his divine nature remained immortal.

But here we must ask an extremely important question:

WHERE DOES SCRIPTURE SAY THAT?

Where does the Bible say:

“JESUS' HUMAN NATURE DIED, WHILE HIS DIVINE NATURE REMAINED ALIVE”?

There is no verse that says this.

This is a later theological explanation designed to reconcile two propositions:

Jesus is God.

and

Jesus died.

But Scripture itself uses much simpler language:

JESUS CHRIST DIED.

DID ONLY PART OF JESUS DIE?

This becomes extremely important.

If Jesus' supposed divine nature remained consciously alive and immortal throughout his death, then in what sense did the whole person Jesus Christ actually die?

The Bible does not describe Jesus as:

partly dead and partly alive.

It does not say:

his humanity was dead while his deity remained alive.

Instead:

CHRIST DIED.

Then:

GOD RAISED CHRIST FROM THE DEAD.

Peter declares:

ACTS 2:24

God raised Jesus up, releasing him from death.

Again we have two clearly distinguishable subjects:

GOD — THE ONE WHO RAISED.

JESUS — THE ONE WHO WAS DEAD AND WAS RAISED.

WITHOUT THE DEATH OF JESUS, THERE IS NO GOSPEL

This is why the issue matters enormously.

The death of Jesus is not an optional detail of Christianity.

Jesus' death is the sacrifice through which forgiveness and salvation are proclaimed.

Paul says:

“CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS.”

If Christ did not genuinely die, then Christ did not genuinely die for our sins.

And if Christ was not genuinely raised from death, Paul's argument becomes devastating:

1 CORINTHIANS 15:17

“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.”

Therefore:

THE REAL DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS ARE ESSENTIAL TO CHRISTIAN FAITH.

We cannot redefine death in such a way that Jesus remained alive throughout the very period Scripture describes as his death.

WHAT ABOUT JESUS' “DIVINE NATURE”?

Another distinction must be made.

Jesus can perfectly express and reveal the nature, character and glory of his Father without therefore being the immortal God himself.

Paul calls Jesus:

COLOSSIANS 1:15

“the image of the invisible God.”

Hebrews describes the Son as the radiance of God's glory and the exact expression of His substance.

But being the image of God distinguishes Jesus from the God whose image he bears.

Jesus himself said:

JOHN 14:9

“The one having seen Me has seen the Father.”

Why?

Because Jesus perfectly revealed his Father.

God's character, authority, words and works were manifested through His Son.

But sharing or displaying God's nature does not automatically mean possessing God's inherent immortality.

And Scripture demonstrates the difference very dramatically:

GOD CANNOT DIE.

JESUS DID DIE.

THE SIGN OF JONAH IS VERY IMPORTANT

Jesus himself prophesied what would happen to him.

MATTHEW 12:40 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

Notice who Jesus says would be in the heart of the earth:

THE SON OF MAN.

He does not say:

“My body will be there while I remain alive elsewhere.”

Nor does he say:

“My human nature will die while my divine nature continues consciously living.”

Jesus speaks about himself.

The Son of Man would be in the heart of the earth.

And the rest of Scripture explains what happened:

CHRIST DIED.

CHRIST WAS BURIED.

CHRIST WAS RAISED ON THE THIRD DAY.

That is the sign of Jonah in the context of Jesus' death and resurrection.

WHAT ABOUT THE “SPIRITS IN PRISON”?

Some Christians argue that Jesus remained consciously alive after his crucifixion and went to preach to spirits in prison, usually appealing to 1 Peter 3:18–20.

But that passage should not simply be assumed to mean:

“JESUS WAS ALIVE WHILE HIS BODY WAS DEAD.”

Peter's difficult statement must be interpreted alongside the Bible's much clearer statements concerning Christ's death and resurrection.

We should not allow one disputed passage to overturn the repeated proclamation:

JESUS DIED.

JESUS WAS BURIED.

GOD RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD.

Whatever Peter means concerning the spirits in prison, the passage does not explicitly teach the later Trinitarian formula:

“Jesus' human nature was dead while his divine nature remained consciously alive.”

WHAT ABOUT JOHN 1:1?

Many Christians will immediately ask:

What about:

JOHN 1:1?

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Then John says:

JOHN 1:14 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”

The crucial question is:

WHAT WAS “THE WORD”?

The Greek word logos can describe God's word, message, expression, reason or purpose.

Under the interpretation I have come to accept, Jesus is what God's word became when it became flesh.

Notice John's wording:

“THE WORD BECAME FLESH.”

John does not actually say:

“God the Son transformed himself into flesh.”

That terminology is not in the verse.

God's word, wisdom, purpose and promise became embodied in:

THE MAN JESUS CHRIST.

HEBREWS SAYS GOD SPOKE THROUGH HIS SON “IN THESE LAST DAYS”

Hebrews begins:

HEBREWS 1:1–2 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“God, having spoken long ago to our fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son…”

Notice the contrast:

Previously:

GOD SPOKE THROUGH THE PROPHETS.

But:

“IN THESE LAST DAYS”

God has spoken through:

HIS SON.

The passage distinguishes:

GOD — the One speaking

from

HIS SON — the One through whom God speaks.

YAHWEH SAYS HE CREATED EVERYTHING

Isaiah gives us another crucial piece of evidence.

ISAIAH 44:24

Yahweh declares that He made all things, stretched out the heavens and spread out the earth.

The language emphasizes Yahweh's unique creative sovereignty:

YAHWEH MADE ALL THINGS.

Likewise:

ISAIAH 45:18

Yahweh identifies Himself as Creator and declares:

“I AM YAHWEH, AND THERE IS NO OTHER.”

And:

ISAIAH 45:5

“I AM YAHWEH, AND THERE IS NO OTHER; BESIDES ME THERE IS NO GOD.”

These passages must form part of any biblical investigation into whether Jesus existed alongside God as another divine person participating in creation.

JESUS HIMSELF SAID HE WAS THE SON OF GOD

Perhaps we should finish where Jesus himself directs us.

Jesus said:

JOHN 10:36 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“You are blaspheming,” because I said, “I am Son of God”?

Jesus does not defend himself by saying:

“I AM GOD.”

He identifies his claim as:

“I AM SON OF GOD.”

John then tells us exactly why he wrote his Gospel:

JOHN 20:31 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”

John wants us to believe:

JESUS IS THE CHRIST.

JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD.

THE BIBLICAL FACTS

Put the evidence together:

God is immortal.

Jesus died.

Jesus was a man.

Jesus was the Son of Man.

Jesus was buried.

Jesus said he would be in the heart of the earth.

God raised Jesus from the dead.

Jesus called himself the Son of God.

Jesus identified his Father as the only true God.

Paul identified:

“ONE GOD”

as:

“THE FATHER.”

1 CORINTHIANS 8:6

And Jesus prayed:

JOHN 17:3 — BEREAN LITERAL BIBLE

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

FINAL CONCLUSION

Final conclusion examining the question: If God is immortal and cannot die, but Jesus really died for our sins, who actually died on the cross?

A biblical research infographic examining the final question of Christ's death: if God is immortal and cannot die, but Jesus genuinely died for our sins, how can Jesus be the immortal God? The image highlights Christ's death, burial and resurrection and asks whether the claim that only Jesus' human nature died is explicitly taught in Scripture.

The question therefore remains remarkably simple:

IF GOD CANNOT DIE, BUT JESUS REALLY DIED, HOW CAN JESUS BE THE IMMORTAL GOD WHO CANNOT DIE?

Saying that only Jesus' human nature died while his divine nature remained immortal does not come from an explicit biblical statement.

More importantly, it raises the very question it is supposed to solve:

WHO ACTUALLY DIED FOR OUR SINS?

The Bible's answer is:

CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS.

Not merely a nature.

Not merely a body.

CHRIST DIED.

He was buried.

And:

GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD.

This genuine death is absolutely essential because without Christ's death for our sins and his resurrection from the dead, the Gospel itself collapses.

The biblical distinction is beautifully simple:

GOD IS IMMORTAL.

JESUS, THE SON OF GOD, DIED FOR OUR SINS.

GOD RAISED HIS SON FROM THE DEAD.

And therefore we should believe exactly what John tells us he wrote his Gospel to establish:

“JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD.”

The Garden Tomb – Could This Be the Tomb of Jesus?

The Garden Tomb in Jerusalem alongside the Great Stone, presenting a biblical, historical and archaeological investigation into whether the Garden Tomb is the burial place of Jesus Christ. Research by Simon Brown.

Could this peaceful garden in Jerusalem contain the actual tomb where Jesus Christ was buried? This investigation examines the biblical accounts, archaeological discoveries, ancient historical evidence, and geographical features surrounding one of Christianity's most fascinating sites.

The True Tomb of Jesus investigation by Simon Brown featuring the Garden Tomb, the Great Stone, book and documentary exploring biblical, historical and archaeological evidence.

The Garden Tomb – Could This Be the Tomb of Jesus?

Part 1 – Beginning the Investigation

For nearly two thousand years, Christians have asked one fascinating question:

Where was Jesus actually buried?

Millions visit Jerusalem every year to see places traditionally associated with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Yet one location continues to attract particular interest because of how closely it appears to match the biblical description—the Garden Tomb.

Could this really be the tomb in which Joseph of Arimathea laid the body of Jesus?

Or is it simply another ancient tomb that later became associated with the Gospel story?

During my visits to Jerusalem, I wanted to answer that question for myself. Rather than accepting tradition, I decided to examine the evidence exactly as I have with every other subject throughout this book.

As Jesus said:

"Seek, and you will find." (Matthew 7:7)

That became the foundation of my investigation.

What Do the Gospels Tell Us?

Before examining archaeology, we must first understand exactly what the Bible says.

Matthew records:

"Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away." (Matthew 27:59–60)

John adds another important detail:

"Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid." (John 19:41)

Immediately we can establish several facts from Scripture.

The tomb must have been:

  • a new tomb

  • cut into solid rock

  • located inside a garden

  • owned by Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man

  • close to the place of crucifixion

  • sealed by a great rolling stone

These details become our checklist.

Any proposed location must agree with the biblical description.

The Garden Tomb

Decorative ceramic sign reading "The Garden Tomb" mounted on a stone wall at the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, a historic site associated with the burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The entrance sign to the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem welcomes visitors to one of Christianity's most well-known archaeological sites. Many Christians believe this peaceful garden may preserve the location where Jesus Christ was buried after His crucifixion and where the empty tomb proclaimed His resurrection. Although its identification remains debated, the Garden Tomb continues to inspire millions of visitors who come to reflect on the Gospel accounts and examine the historical and archaeological evidence surrounding the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

Just outside Jerusalem's Damascus Gate lies a peaceful garden containing an ancient rock-cut tomb.

Many Christians believe this is the very tomb in which Jesus was buried.

When I first entered the garden, I was immediately struck by how well the location matched John's description.

It is quite literally a garden containing a rock-cut tomb.

Standing there, I realised this was not simply another ancient burial place. Every feature deserved careful examination.

Inside the tomb are two burial chambers cut into the rock. It is widely believed that Joseph of Arimathea originally prepared the tomb for himself and his family before offering it for the burial of Jesus.

Whether that tradition is correct remains the question.

The evidence would need to speak for itself.

A Wealthy Man's Garden

Matthew describes Joseph of Arimathea as a rich man (Matthew 27:57).

That small detail becomes surprisingly significant.

Within the Garden Tomb complex are the remains of both an ancient wine press and one of the largest cisterns (water reservoirs) in Jerusalem.

These are not features normally associated with an ordinary burial site.

They indicate that this was once an important private garden belonging to a wealthy owner—precisely what we would expect if it belonged to Joseph of Arimathea.

Already the biblical description and the archaeology appear to fit remarkably well.

The Place of the Skull

Rock formation known as the Place of the Skull (Golgotha) near the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, traditionally associated with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ outside the city walls.

This rocky hillside near the Garden Tomb is known by many as the Place of the Skull (Golgotha). Its appearance has led some to suggest it resembles the outline of a human skull, matching the location described in the Gospels where Jesus was crucified. The Bible records that Jesus suffered outside the city gates at a place called Golgotha, meaning "Place of the Skull" (Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:22; John 19:17; Hebrews 13:12). While scholars continue to debate the exact location, this site remains one of Jerusalem's most recognised places associated with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Matthew records:

"They came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull)." (Matthew 27:33)

Just a short distance from the Garden Tomb stands one of Jerusalem's most recognisable rock formations.

Eroded into the limestone cliff is a striking feature that resembles the face of a human skull.

Whether this formation gave Golgotha its name cannot be proved with absolute certainty.

However, the resemblance is remarkable.

Standing between Skull Hill and the Garden Tomb, it is easy to understand why so many researchers—including Major-General Charles George Gordon—became convinced that this was the authentic location described in the Gospels.

For me, this was the beginning of a fascinating journey.

Because the more I investigated...

...the more the evidence seemed to fit.

And I soon discovered that this was only the beginning.

In the next part, we'll examine the tomb itself, the evidence for the great rolling stone, the ancient seal, historical maps, Jeremiah's Grotto, and the remarkable discoveries that convinced me this site deserves to be taken very seriously.

The Garden Tomb – Could This Be the Tomb of Jesus?

The Garden Tomb in Jerusalem with the large rolling stone, examining whether this historic site could be the burial place of Jesus Christ described in the Gospels.

The Garden Tomb is one of Jerusalem's most visited Christian sites and is believed by many to be the place where Jesus Christ was buried following His crucifixion. This study examines the biblical accounts, archaeological discoveries, the nearby Place of the Skull (Golgotha), the Great Stone, and the historical evidence to determine whether this remarkable site could truly be the tomb described in the Gospels.

Part 2 – Examining the Archaeological Evidence

Having compared the biblical description with the location of the Garden Tomb, the next question is obvious:

Does the archaeology agree with the Gospels?

This is where the investigation becomes particularly interesting.

As I explored the Garden Tomb and its surroundings, I found feature after feature that appeared to correspond remarkably well with the biblical record.

Could this simply be coincidence?

Or are we looking at the very place described nearly 2,000 years ago?

A Tomb Cut Out of Solid Rock

Simon Brown pointing to ancient chisel marks carved into the solid rock inside the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, traditionally associated with the burial of Jesus Christ.

Matthew records that Joseph of Arimathea placed Jesus in "his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock" (Matthew 27:60). Inside the Garden Tomb, the walls still display clear chisel marks left by the ancient stonecutters who carved the burial chamber from the solid limestone. These visible features closely match the Gospel description of a tomb hewn out of rock and provide visitors with a remarkable glimpse into the construction methods used for Jewish burial tombs in the first century.

Matthew tells us that Joseph of Arimathea placed Jesus in:

"...his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock." (Matthew 27:60)

The Garden Tomb is exactly that.

Unlike many later burial places built from masonry, this tomb was carved directly into the natural limestone bedrock.

Walking inside, you can still see the original chisel marks left by the ancient stone workers.

Standing within the tomb, it is impossible not to wonder whether these very walls witnessed one of the greatest events in human history.

A New Tomb

The Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, a first-century rock-cut tomb believed by many to match the new burial tomb described in John 19:41 where Jesus was laid.

The Garden Tomb is a rock-cut burial chamber in Jerusalem that many believe matches the Gospel description of the new tomb where Jesus was laid after His crucifixion. Its location in a garden near Golgotha continues to make it one of Christianity's most significant archaeological sites.

John tells us another important detail:

"In the garden was a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid." (John 19:41)

The Gospels emphasise that Jesus was placed in a new tomb.

This prevented any future suggestion that another body had been mistaken for His.

It also fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy:

"He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death." (Isaiah 53:9)

Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy member of the Jewish council and a disciple of Jesus, generously provided his own newly prepared family tomb.

Evidence of Wealth

Matthew specifically describes Joseph as:

"...a rich man from Arimathea..." (Matthew 27:57)

That detail becomes surprisingly important.

Within the Garden Tomb complex archaeologists have identified the remains of an ancient wine press together with one of the largest water cisterns in Jerusalem.

Neither feature would normally belong to an ordinary burial site.

Both point to a substantial private garden owned by someone of considerable wealth.

This harmonises remarkably well with Matthew's description of Joseph of Arimathea.

The Garden

John records:

"Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden." (John 19:41)

Many people overlook this simple statement.

The Bible does not merely say there was a tomb.

It says there was a garden.

Today the Garden Tomb still sits within a peaceful garden setting, containing ancient agricultural features including the wine press and water system.

Again, this is exactly the type of location described in John's Gospel.

Perhaps the most striking feature lies only a short distance from the tomb.

Matthew writes:

"They came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull)." (Matthew 27:33)

Embedded within the limestone cliff opposite the Garden Tomb is an extraordinary natural formation.

Weathering has produced what appears to be the outline of a human skull.

Large hollow areas resemble eye sockets, while the surrounding rock gives the appearance of a face.

It is easy to understand why early visitors identified this place with Golgotha—the Place of the Skull.

In 1883, British Major-General Charles George Gordon became convinced that this was the biblical site of the crucifixion.

He was not alone.

Earlier researchers including Otto Thenius, Colonel Churchill, and Fisher Howe had also concluded that this location deserved serious consideration.

Outside the City Walls

Another important biblical detail is often forgotten.

Hebrews tells us:

"So Jesus also suffered outside the city gate." (Hebrews 13:12)

The Garden Tomb lies just outside the ancient northern walls of Jerusalem, close to the Damascus Gate.

This perfectly fits the biblical requirement that Jesus was crucified and buried outside the city.

The location is also known to have been an area where Roman executions took place during the first century.

Once again, the archaeological evidence agrees with Scripture.

The Evidence Continues to Grow

At this stage of my investigation, several important facts had already emerged.

The site contains:

  • A rock-cut tomb.

  • A wealthy man's garden.

  • An ancient wine press.

  • A large water cistern.

  • A location immediately beside Skull Hill.

  • A position outside the ancient city walls.

  • A first-century burial complex consistent with the Gospel accounts.

Each discovery, taken on its own, might simply be coincidence.

But together they begin forming a remarkably consistent picture.

Yet the strongest evidence was still to come.

In the next chapter we will examine the ancient maps, Jeremiah's Grotto, the mysterious seal outside the tomb, the measurements of the burial chamber, and the astonishing discoveries that eventually led me to what I believe is the missing piece of the entire puzzle—the Great Stone of Mark 16:4.

The Garden Tomb – Could This Be the Tomb of Jesus?

Part 3 – Ancient Maps, Jeremiah's Grotto, and Forgotten Evidence

By this stage of my investigation, the Garden Tomb already appeared to satisfy many of the biblical requirements.

It was a rock-cut tomb.

It stood within a garden.

It belonged to a wealthy estate.

It lay beside what many believe is the Place of the Skull.

It was situated outside the ancient city walls.

But one question still remained.

Had anyone before the discovery of the Garden Tomb identified this location as the burial place of Jesus?

The answer surprised me.

Searching Ancient Jerusalem

Rather than relying only on modern archaeology, I began searching for old maps, drawings, and paintings of ancient Jerusalem.

If early Christians had remembered the location of Jesus' tomb, perhaps traces of that tradition still survived.

Eventually I discovered a collection of remarkable historical illustrations showing Jerusalem centuries before the Garden Tomb became famous.

What caught my attention immediately was that several of these ancient illustrations identified the very same area north of Jerusalem as the location associated with Jesus' crucifixion and burial.

This was extraordinary.

These drawings had been produced hundreds of years before the Garden Tomb was rediscovered.

They could not have been influenced by modern archaeology.

Taking the Maps to Jerusalem

Naturally, I wanted expert opinion.

I travelled back to Jerusalem carrying copies of these ancient maps and met Ken Trestrayl, one of the Garden Tomb guides who had spent many years studying the site.

As we examined the maps together, he told me he had never seen them before.

He was genuinely amazed by how accurately they appeared to identify the region surrounding Skull Hill and the Garden Tomb.

For someone who had dedicated many years to studying the site, his reaction was encouraging.

Confirmation at the National Library

Simon Brown examining historic maps and drawings of ancient Jerusalem with researcher Rubin Aylett while investigating the location of the tomb of Jesus.

To better understand the location of Jesus' burial, I examined historic maps, drawings, and paintings of ancient Jerusalem alongside researcher Rubin Aylett. Comparing these historical records with the biblical accounts and modern archaeology provided valuable clues in the search for the true tomb of Jesus.

Wanting further verification, I visited the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem, where many of these historical documents had originated.

There I met Rubin Aylett, who confirmed that the illustrations had indeed been produced long before the Garden Tomb was rediscovered in the nineteenth century.

That fact immediately made them historically significant.

If these early artists had independently identified the same location centuries earlier, it suggested that an older tradition concerning the site may have survived through history.

While these paintings cannot prove that the Garden Tomb is the burial place of Jesus, they certainly deserve careful consideration.

Jeremiah's Grotto

Interior of Jeremiah's Grotto in Jerusalem, an ancient rock-cut cave located near the traditional site of Golgotha and the Garden Tomb.

Jeremiah's Grotto is an ancient rock-cut cave situated near the traditional site of Golgotha and the Garden Tomb. Historic maps identifying this grotto provided another clue in my investigation into the location of Jesus' crucifixion and burial.

One of the old maps contained another fascinating clue.

Near the place identified as Golgotha appeared the words "Jeremiah's Grotto."

According to Jewish tradition, this cave was believed to be where the prophet Jeremiah mourned the destruction of Jerusalem and composed the Book of Lamentations.

Curious to see whether such a place still existed, I began searching the area.

To my surprise, I found a large ancient cavern close to the Garden Tomb that local residents still referred to as Jeremiah's Grotto.

At the time of my visit, it was being used as a storage warehouse.

The owner kindly spoke with us and confirmed that local tradition had long associated the cave with the prophet Jeremiah.

Again, this does not prove the Garden Tomb is the tomb of Jesus.

However, it demonstrates that this area has been regarded as historically significant for many centuries.

Ancient Traditions

One of the mistakes we often make is assuming that historical traditions have no value.

Of course, traditions alone cannot establish historical fact.

But when ancient traditions agree with archaeology, biblical descriptions, geographical features, and historical documents, they become pieces of a much larger puzzle.

The Garden Tomb is unusual because several independent lines of evidence appear to converge upon the same location.

Each individual piece may not be decisive.

Together, however, they begin forming an increasingly persuasive picture.

Following the Evidence

Throughout this investigation I made a conscious decision not to begin with a conclusion.

Instead, I simply asked one question after another.

Does the evidence agree with the Bible?

Each discovery either strengthened—or weakened—the case.

So far, every major feature described in the Gospels had found a remarkable parallel at the Garden Tomb.

Yet I still had not reached the evidence that convinced me more than anything else.

In the next chapter, we will examine the remarkable measurements inside the tomb, the mysterious seal outside its entrance, the surprising connection with the Shroud of Turin, and the discovery that would eventually lead me to what I believe is the missing piece of the entire investigation—the Great Stone described in Mark 16:4.

The Discovery of the Great Stone of Mark 16:4!

Revealing the True Tomb of Jesus

By Simon Brown.

At the end of 2011, I, Simon Brown, presented the evidence from my research which, I believe, reveals that the Great Stone at Mount Nebo is the very stone described in Gospel of Mark 16:4 and Gospel of Matthew 27:60 — the stone rolled into place to seal the tomb of Jesus Christ.

Most Christians are aware that the tomb of Jesus was sealed by a large rolling stone placed there by Joseph of Arimathea. According to the Gospel accounts, this was not an ordinary stone. Mark specifically describes it as “exceedingly large.”

For nearly two thousand years, the location of this stone remained unknown. I believe that God has now revealed it.

Just as Jim and Penny Caldwell of the Split Rock Research Foundation identified what they believe to be the Split Rock of Exodus 17:6, I believe I have discovered the missing link connected to the tomb of Jesus: the Great Stone of Mark 16:4.

This stone is unlike any other in the world.

The Beginning of the Search In 2007, after becoming deeply fascinated by the subject of the tomb of Jesus, I produced a documentary film titled Our Search For The Tomb of Jesus.

During the filming, my team and I carefully measured the exterior channel at The Garden Tomb. Our goal was simple: to determine the size of the stone that would have originally sealed the tomb.

Photograph of the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, Israel, a rock-cut tomb that many Christians believe may be the tomb of Jesus Christ, showing the entrance carved into the limestone hillside.

Figure 3. The Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, a rock-cut tomb regarded by many Christians as a possible site of Jesus' burial, examined here in connection with archaeological research into the large stone described in Mark 16:4.

I believed that if the stone could ever be found, it would identify the true tomb of Jesus.

Why was this important?

Because both Matthew and Mark clearly state that the stone sealing the tomb was not of ordinary size. Mark 16:4 says:

“And having looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, for it was exceedingly large.”

This detail is crucial.

Years passed after my research, and making my documentary film titled Our Search For The Tomb of Jesus.

and I had no expectation that I would ever encounter such a stone. Then one day, while watching a Christian video, I saw something extraordinary — a massive circular stone at Mount Nebo.

I was stunned.

The moment I saw it, I believed there was something deeply significant about it. After studying the footage further, I became convinced that I needed to travel both to Mount Nebo and to the Garden Tomb itself in order to compare measurements, rock samples, and physical characteristics.

I believed God was revealing something remarkable.

Gathering the Evidence At that time, representatives of The Garden Tomb Association agreed, although somewhat reluctantly, to hear my findings.

They permitted me to collect evidence and later present my research to them.

I travelled to both Mount Nebo and the Garden Tomb to conduct detailed examinations.

What did my research reveal?

The Great Stone at Mount Nebo matched the Garden Tomb in remarkable ways:

The same colour

The same type of stone

The same thickness

The same height

Identical chisel marks

Most significantly, the stone measured approximately 15 inches thick — exactly matching the 15-inch-wide rolling channel at the Garden Tomb.

Figure 4. Simon Brown comparing the Great Stone at Mount Nebo with the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem as part of archaeological research into the large stone described in Mark 16:4.

Laboratory analysis in the United Kingdom also indicated that rock samples from the stone and the tomb were consistent with one another.

Figure 5. Simon Brown standing beside the Great Stone at Mount Nebo, Jordan, during archaeological research into its possible connection with the large stone described in Mark 16:4 and the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem.

For nearly 2,000 years, this massive stone sat near Mount Nebo at a village until it was found under rubble and then was moved to the location of where it is now at Mount Nebo, with no clear explanation for its existence. Even those guarding it today did not know its age, origin, or purpose. Yet these Christians had continued protecting it as though it were a treasure.

Why?

I believe the answer is now clear.

The Question of Size.

One of the major objections raised by staff associated with the Garden Tomb was that the Mount Nebo stone was “too large” to fit the tomb. They argued that the original stone would only have measured between four and five feet in diameter.

But does a four- or five-foot stone qualify as “exceedingly large”?

I do not believe so.

Stones of that size were common in ancient tombs. The stone at Mount Nebo, however, is enormous — truly deserving the description given in the Gospel of Mark.

In the Greek text, the phrase used can be translated as “very large” or “exceedingly great.” The Mount Nebo stone fits that description perfectly.

Furthermore, old photographs of the Garden Tomb, dating from approximately 1898 to 1946, reveal what appears to be an additional stopping stone positioned within the channel. This detail is extremely important because it helps establish the likely diameter of the original rolling stone.

Based on this evidence, I concluded that the original stone measured between nine and ten feet in diameter.

That changes everything.

A Stone With No Explanation

An article published by the International Symposium of Heritage Interpretation describes the Mount Nebo stone as a “large circular tomb door.” The article acknowledges that the stone was brought to Mount Nebo from another location and states that its origin and purpose are unclear.

But I believe its purpose is not unclear at all.

I believe this is the missing Great Stone from the tomb of Jesus Christ.

Others have also recognised the unusual nature of this discovery. One commenter on my YouTube channel described the evidence as “potentially explosive.”

Author Perry Stone referred to the Mount Nebo stone in his book Secrets from Beyond the Grave as “a massive rolling stone.”

Bob Mitchell of Shofar Ministries suggested that Byzantine believers may have preserved the stone and moved it to Mount Nebo as a memorial to the Resurrection.

Testing All Things.

Despite the measurements, the laboratory analysis, the matching chisel marks, and the photographic evidence, some still reject the conclusion that this is the original stone from the tomb of Jesus.

But Scripture says:

“Test all things. Hold fast to what is good.”

— 1 Thessalonians 5:21

That is exactly what I have attempted to do.

The evidence should be examined carefully and honestly.

The Bible itself remains reliable and true.

In Acts 13:41 we read:

“Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.”

Perhaps that verse applies even today.

A Testimony to the Resurrection

I believe the Great Stone at Mount Nebo stands as a testimony to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Overlooking the Promised Land, this stone reminds mankind that God sent an angel to roll away the stone from the tomb — declaring that death had been conquered and the debt of sin fully paid.

Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

And because He lives, those who believe in Him have the promise of eternal life.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

— John 3:16

What do you believe?

Here are the correspondents of the emails regarding this discovery of The Great Stone.

I Simon Brown sent an email to the monastery at Mount Nebo asking PLEASE DO YOU KNOW WHERE THIS STONE CAME FROM? and DO YOU KNOW HOW OLD IT IS AND WHY IS IT THERE? 2 days later I received an email from them saying it was found in a old village and was used as a fortified door for a monastery. But here was the exciting bit. They did not know how it got there or why it was made in the first place. Here was their email

Dear Sir,
The stone was a rolling door (!) found near the Mount Nebo and put there to protect and show it.

I was so confident this was the stone to the tomb that I sent emails to the Garden tomb in Jerusalem for the attention of the new manger Richard Merion. As you would expect I received no reply. I called the garden tomb staff by phone and asked would they please ask Richard to call me in the UK. To my surprise he called me. I told him who I was and that I was very familiar with the history of the garden tomb, as I had in the past done much research and made a film of it. I decided to pop the big question which I didn't think he would believe. "Richard, if I told you I have discovered the missing rolling stone to the garden tomb would you believe me?" He said at this stage he wouldn't say, but he would be willing to hear my case and would I email him with the updates? Perhaps I could meet him in London to present the evidence. I was very pleased with his cooperation and told him I would gather all the facts together and then call him. After some weeks I emailed Richard again, telling him that I am going to make a trip to take measurements of both the stone and the garden tomb. Getting no reply to my emails I spoke to Richard for the second time. He seemed reluctant to co-operate and told me he had sent me an email, which I never received. I asked him to resend it, but It still did not come. I then received an email from Mr Victor Jack at the Garden Tomb Association in London. He said he was not really bothered about whether the stone is found or not, and that similar claims had been made by Ron Wyatt, which proved to them not to be true. However he said that Richard Merion would hear my case.
Here below you can read all the emails to and from, Mr Richard Merion Director, and Victor Jack Chairman of the Garden Tomb (Jerusalem) Association.

Dear Mr Brown,
Thank you for your email. I have been involved with the Garden Tomb for over 20 years and during that time we have had a number of claims by other individuals to have found the Rolling Stone and even the ark of the Covenant under Skull Hill. None of these have been found to be true.
At the moment I will leave our very efficient Director, Richard Meryon, to correspond with you, as he has asked for further evidence to substantiate your claim. I couldn’t ask our Garden Tomb Council to meet with you until further confirmation of your claim is received.
We have always taken the view that the message of the death and resurrection of Jesus is our prime focus and the reason for the existence of our ministry in Jerusalem. Skull Hill, the empty tomb, the cistern and the wine press are all powerful visual aids that enhance that ministry but we have never claimed that our site is definitely the place where Jesus died and rose again, even though some think it is.
Richard will keep me informed.
Yours sincerley, in our risen Lord, Victor Jack.

The Missing Rolling Stone For The Garden Tomb.

Dear Mr Richard Merion with reference to my previous emails and my telephone conversations with you.
As I agreed with you. I have kept my promises and presented the evidence of my case regarding this being the Great missing stone from the garden tomb.
However you have never once had the decency to acknowledge any of my many emails.
Regardless to you stating to me you would communicate by email.
Mr TV Jack also stated to me you would hear my case.
Is this how you normally treat your brothers in Christ?
I pray you will receive this wonderful news the lord has now revealed to the world with joyful hearts.
In the name of Jesus.

Simon
I am rather hurt by the tone of your e-mail as I have not received anything from you by e-mail.   I have just done another search and cannot find any trace of receiving your thesis.
I await the evidence and will give it a good read.   Please send it to me; I will acknowledge its receipt, and will then let you know of the ministry’s response.
Yours faithfully

Dear Richard I don't mean to hurt you in any way. However I did what I said I would do which is to send you all the very hard work I have done. By presenting my case. And when I hear nothing I get hurt also.
Lets continue to be brothers in Christ and move on.
All I ask now is you hear my case so I can then go forward. Here is the link which has much of the facts.

1.       I have replied very time – have you checked your spam filter?
2.       Please do not continue to saturate me; I have told you that you will hear from the GT Chairman when he has canvassed the trustees’ opinions.   And you will.

Last and final email from Victor Jack, Chairman of the Garden Tomb (Jerusalem) Association.

Dear Simon,
A possible Stone

While you have in the main been corresponding with our Director in Jerusalem, both he and you have kept me fully advised of your enquiry, of your research and of your offer.   Thank you.
Many people approach the Garden Tomb (Jerusalem) Association with a broad variety of requests and suggestions.   Everyone is well-meaning, often genuinely sincere, but not all are in harmony with our own ministry’s purpose.   I have been closely involved with the Garden for over 20 years so I am well versed with all these contacts.
As Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the GT(J)A I presented both your report and the video clip to the whole Board at our trustees’ meeting in London, on Tuesday 15th March 2011.  I regret to inform you that the Board did not believe that what you have offered enhances the ministry of the Garden.  Furthermore, if you raised all the funds and the necessary permissions to re-locate the stone from Mount Nebo to East Jerusalem, the Board will still not accept your offer.
Our Trustees have also asked me to tell you that we are deeply concerned that you have broken two long-standing rules of the Garden Tomb, which is a private Garden, in that you not only took video in the Garden without our permission, you also took away material (the rock that you are seen to pick up from outside the tomb) without are permission.
The Board is also very concerned by your reference, without our being able to verify what you say, to communication with staff of the GT(J)A in your publicity.   I therefore ask you to remove all reference to any communication with the GT(J)A, either positively or negatively, in any publicity.
To avoid any future disagreements that might embarrass either or both parties, let us agree that the GT(J)A neither confirms or denies its position with regard to the Mount Nebo stone.   We also ask you not to allow any of your filmed footage in the Garden Tomb to appear in the public domain.
Our response may disappoint you, but we have a responsibility to uphold the ministry with which we have been entrusted.
Yours sincerely,
Victor Jack
